Trikatu churna is one of the traditional poly herbal preparation, formed by mixing equal quantities of three important spicy materials such as Piper longum L. (Piperaceae), Piper nigrum L. (Piperaceae)and Zingiber officinale Roscoe (Zingiberaceae). Trikatu is also known as “ Three Bitters”. The trikatu preparation was reported to contain alkaloids, phenols, tannins, flavanoids, steroids, lignin & saponins. The objective of study is to evaluate the antimicrobial activity of trikatu churna & its individual ingredients with their preliminary phytochemical study. The aqueous extracts of trikatu churna & its each ingredient were tested for antimicrobial activity against certain bacterial strains of Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus by in vitro agar well diffusion method and the results are recorded as the zone of inhibition. Trikatu churna was found to possess higher extent of phytoconstituents with promising antimicrobial...

In the present investigation, 4-chloro acetophenone on condensation with 2-nitro benzaldehydes in methanolic NaOH solution yielded the corresponding chalcone. These chalcone were further reacted with Isonicotyl hydrazide and semicarbazide in ethanol which led to the formation of chalcone Isonicotyl hydrazone and chalcone semicarbazone derivatives respectively. The newly synthesized derivatives and there copper complexes were characterized on the basis of their chemical properties and spectroscopic data such as IR, NMR and UV. All newly synthesized compounds were evaluated for their antibacterial activities against E. coli and S. aureus also for antifungal activities against P....

The antibacterial activity of methanol extract of Abutilon indicum, Hygrophila spinosa and Mimosa pudica were studied by agar well diffusion method in vitro. The effect of antibacterial potential was examined against Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus cereus, Proteus vulgaris, Enterococcus faecalis, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Vibrio cholerae, Salmonella typhi and Salmonella paratyphi. The methanol extract of these medicinal plants have showed consistently significant inhibitory activity on different bacterial pathogens tested. Furthermore, the Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) studies carried out by broth dilution assay and found the MIC ranged between 0.2 to 0.9mg/ml. Overall the methanol extracts was found to be more effective. The results of the extracts were compared with the standard antibiotics...

Purpose: The present study was designed to evaluate the phytochemical, biochemical and antimicrobial activity of leaf extracts of Boerhavia erecta and Chromolaena odorata. Methods: The leaves of Boerhavia erecta and Chromolaena odorata were washed with tap water followed by distilled water. The cleaned leaves were shade dried and then made to fine powder by using homogenizer. About 1.0 gram of clean dried leaf was taken along with 10 ml ethanol and mashed well in a homogenizer and filtered, then used for biochemical, phytochemical analysis and antimicrobial activity by using various standard methods. Results and Conclusions: Since, these plants possess many medicinal properties and the results showed that both the plant extracts possessed significant levels of minerals and vitamins. The presence of biochemical constituents and positive antimicrobial activity expertise its medicinal property. Natural products perform various functions, and many of them have interesting and useful biological activities. Boerhavia erecta and Chromolaena odorata are plants which are extensively used in folk medicine....

Screening is important in investigating antimicrobial activities of bacteria in a quest to discover new antimicrobials. Various protocols are readily available and employed by researchers worldwide studying microbiostatic and microbicidal activities of bacterial. This research therefore aims at evaluating available protocols and suggesting a standardized model. For the purpose of these research, antimicrobial ability of Aeromonas spp isolated from estuary was investigated using agar well diffusion method, deferred method and agar disc diffusion method respectively. Result obtained reveals that five isolates were positive to antimicrobial production among fifteen bacteria screened. Result was depended on the protocol utilized. Agar well diffusion produced a visible result when compared to others. Next to this was agar disc method. Deferred method involving both cross streaking and spot on lawn could not produce result as of swarming nature of the positive isolates tested. Based on our results, protocols utilized were grouped into preliminary screening test (PST) and confirmatory tests (CT) respectively. Preliminary screening protocol (PST) consists of deferred method – perpendicular cross streaking and...
