The administration of atropine to a large population for treatment of intoxication carries the risk of allergic or toxic reactions in a small number of patients. It has been reported rarely in the literatures .We describe a cases of atropine-induced psychotic disorder in a substance abused patient and different approaches of management. Dryness of the mouth, blurred vision, photophobia and tachycardia commonly occur with chronic administration of doses. In addition psychotic symptoms such as restlessness and excitement, hallucinations, delirium may occur due to atropine. This is a study of a 55 year old female patient who manifested with visual and auditory hallucination, fatigue, anxiety, headache visual disturbances and chest tightness after intake of atropine. To manage this adverse drug reaction the dose of atropine was progressively reduced to 1ml/hr and 0.5ml/hr and discontinued after appearance of signs of complete atropinization. Patient was given with IV morphine 2 mg/hr to manage agitation and IV haloperidol 5mg as required to managing the psychiatric effects. Physostigmine, scopolamine or glycopyrrolate was given in some cases as replacement of...

Introduction: Researchers have shown variable prevalence of overweight & obesity among medical students. Aim: To assess the prevalence & determinants of overweight/obesity among undergraduate medical students. Methods: A cross sectional study was carried out among 278 medical students at Kolkata from March 2015 up to May 2015 by filling a pre designed, pre tested structured questionnaire and doing anthropometric measurements. Results: 66% were between 20-21 years ; 58% were males; 54% were day scholars; 78 %were from nuclear family; 49% read in 2nd year;67% belonged to class I (modified BG Prasad scale March 2015);9% were obese & 19% were overweight as per WHO scale ; 28% & 20% were obese and overweight respectively as per Indian scale;1% male & 9% female had a waist circumference of more than 102 cm & 88 cm respectively (WHO scale);27% male & 30% female had waist circumference of more than 90 cm & 80 cm respectively (Indian scale);10% male & 21% female had a waist/hip ratio of more than0.90 & 0.85 respectively. The...

In the present study an attempt has been made to explore radiation and cadmium induced histological alterations in mice liver and their modulation by Emblica officinalis fruit Extract (EOE). For this purpose mice were selected from Inbred colony and divided into five different groups. Group: Ι (Sham-irradiated group) considered as normal; II (cadmium chloride treated group) in this group animals were administered 20 ppm cadmium chloride orally as drinking water; III (irradiated group) animals were exposed to 3.5 Gy gamma radiation; IV (Both radiation and cadmium treated group); V (Radiation, cadmium and Emblica treated group) in this group animals were given 1000 mg/kg body wt/animal/day EOE continuously for seven consecutive days, prior to radiation and cadmium chloride treatment and on the 7th day animals were irradiated after 30 minutes of extract administration. The animals from the above groups were autopsied by cervical dislocation after 1, 2, 4, 7, 14 and 28 days and liver were removed and prepared for light microscopy. The liver cells of irradiated and cadmium treated...

The research was carried out to formulate and evaluate ophthalmic solutions of Ofloxacin with amino acid transporters and compare the transcorneal permeation of Oflaxacin with that of the standard. In the study three different eye drop formulations were prepared by conjugation of the drug with different amino acids such as Alanine, Glycine and Leucine by solvent evaporation technique, the extent of transcorneal permeation of the drug was determined and compared with that of formulated standard Oflaxacin ophthalmic solution. The prepared formulations have been observed to play significant role in the process of maintaining structural and functional integrity of conjunctiva and retina. Permeation characteristics of drug were evaluated by introducing 1 ml of formulation on freshly excised cornea fixed between donor and receptor compartments of an all-glass modified Franz diffusion cell and measuring the drug permeated in the receptor cell by UV at 288nm. After 120 minutes, the permeation of standard Ofloxacin solution was found to be 0.02% and the permeation of the formulated conjugates of Ofloxacin with different amino...

Type II diabetes mellitus is a serious global health problem and is associated with considerable morbidity and mortality. According to International Diabetic Federation, by 2030 there is 1 adult in 10 will have diabetes. To achieve long term glycemic control, multiple drugs including parenteral therapy with insulin and oral drugs are needed. Hyperglycemia, diabetes associated complications and co morbidities are the strong factors that favor therapeutic poly pharmacy and reduced patient adherence. Materials and methods: It was an experimental study with pre test and post test design conducted in the department of General Medicine, Govt Medical College, Kozhikode. Data were collected from OP sheets, laboratory reports and patient interview with medication adherence questionnaire. Adherence questionnaire prepared based on Morisky 8 item medication adherence questionnaire. Results: A total of 218 patients with type 2 diabetes and associated complications were enrolled into the study from January 2013 to May 2013 after signing the written consent form. Medication adherences have been improved after pharmacist intervention. Poor adherence has been reduced from 48.2%...
