Based on the ethno botanical survey and the related literature, 285 solvent extracts from 57 ethno medicinal plants belonging to 55 genera and 34 families were subjected to preliminary screening for antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli and Bacillus subtilis using agar well diffusion method at concentrations of 5 & 2.5 mg/ml. Among 285 plant extracts, some exhibited very effective activity, some exhibited effective activity, some exhibited moderate and some exhibited weak activity and no activity was observed in some extracts against E. coli and B. subtilis. Among the plants tested, maximum activity was observed in all the solvents extracts of Argemone mexicana, Allium sativum, Lantana camara, Tephrosia purpurea and Withania somnifera. The results of the present study indicate that the extracts of different parts of 57 ethnomedicinal plants have more potential of antibacterial activity and are concentration dependent. The demonstration of broad spectrum of the above said 5 plants may help to discover new chemical classes of antibiotic substances that could serve as selective agents for infectious disease chemotherapy...

In an effort to develop new targets with enhanced antihyperlipidemic activity, seven new inhibitors such as beta-sitosterol, cholesterol, cholesterol sulfate, desmosterol, lathosterol, stigmasterol and cholesterol acetate was targeted using in silico docking experiments with the modeled structure of the Niemann-Pick C2 target gene (NPC2). Quantitative structure–activity relationship models (QSAR models) was used to the predict the physico-chemical properties or pharmacology activity of the selected drugs and further antihyperlipdemic evaluation of NPC2 gene was studied by analyzing the interaction of hydrogen bonds within the active site of the modeled protein. The confirmation obtained after docking showed good energy binding and docking energy which is about -9.55 Kcal/mol and -11.3Kcal/mol, this shows the inhibitor demosterol showed good interactions towards the modeled...

Garcinia imberti Bourd. a critically endangered tree belongs to the family Clusiaceae found only in India. The phytochemicals and antioxidant studies were carried out for the methanolic extracts of Garcinia imberti leaves and stem bark using DPPH and ABTS radical scavenging assay. Preliminary phytochemical screening of methanolic extracts of Garcinia imberti revealed the presence of various bioactive components like alkaloids, flavanoids, steroids, glycosides, phenols, saponins, terpenoids, resins, carbohydrates and tannins in both leaves and stem bark. The quantitative analysis of phytochemicals of the extracts showed the presence of high amount of tannins (0.92 ± 0.23mg/gm) and alkaloids (0.83 ± 0.48mg/gm) in leaf and high concentration of flavanoids (0.65±0.16mg/gm) and tannins (0.78±1.12mg/gm) in bark extract. The result of the present study concluded that the methanolic extracts of Garcinia imberti leaves and stem bark possess antioxidant activity due to the presence of significant amount of phenolic compounds which are the major contributors of antioxidant activity. The finding of this study suggests that the studied plant is a potential source of natural...

Diclofenac sodium is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug with wide use in the treatment of rheumatic diseases. Enteric-coated tablet form of this drug has been developed to prevent the gastric irritation problem encountered with its use and to improve its efficacy. The enteric film coat resists solution in gastric fluid and disintegrates and releases the medication in the intestines. Many brands of enteric coated tablets of diclofenac sodium are manufactured and sold in the market. However, there is a real concern that counterfeited drugs and drugs with poor pharmaceutical quality could enter the Libyan market. In this study, the physicochemical quality of four brands of diclofenac sodium 50 mg enteric-coated tablets was assessed and compared in terms of visual inspected characters, diameter, thickness, weight uniformity, hardness, friability, disintegration time, dissolution, and drug content. The brands compared were VoltarèneTM (brand A), Diclofenac NormonTM(Brand B), NeoflamTM (brand C), and DivonTM (brand D). As expected, brand A showed acceptable results considering it to be the original brand name drug. Brands B and D...

The construction and electrochemical response characteristics of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) membrane sensors for determination of Tolterodine tartrate (TT) in presence of its oxidative degradation product are described. The sensors are based on the ion association complexes of TT cation with sodium tetraphenyl borate (TT-TPB) [sensor 1] or phosphomolybidic acid (TT-PMA) [sensor 2] counter anions as ion exchange sites in PVC matrix using dioctylphathalate (DOP) as plasticizer. The performance characteristics, sensitivity and selectivity of these electrodes in presence of TT oxidative degradation product were evaluated according to IUPAC recommendations. It reveals a fast, stable and linear response for TT over the concentration range 10-5-10-2 M with cationic slopes of 58.6 mV and 56.6 mV per concentration decade with sensors 1 and 2, respectively. The sensors are used for determination of TT, in pure form, in presence of its degradation product and in tablets. Validation of the method shows suitability of the proposed sensors for use in the quality control assessment of TT and for routine analysis as stability indicating method....
