The present study was carried out to assess the anticancer activity of methanol extracts of internal bone of L.duvauceli and S. pharaonis for cell viability and toxicity on HepG2 liver cancer cells. The bone extracts had significant cytotoxicity on HepG2 cell in different concentrations (100,500,1000 µg/ml). Methanol fraction of squid bone powder showed cell death at a higher concentration of 1000µg. 27% toxicity was observed at 100µg/ml and 37% at 1000µg/ml. The viability of cuttlefish bone powder ranged from 58% (1000µg/ml) to 68% (100µg/ml). Hep G2 cells experienced a significant decrease in viability at low concentration with an eventual decline at the highest concentration. The percentage of toxicity of cuttle bone extracts varied from 32 to 42. Minimum toxicity of 32% was observed at 100µg and maximum of 42% was observed at 1000µg concentration and IC 50 at a concentration of >1000µg. The percentage of toxicity showed increasing trend with increasing concentration of the extract. The result suggested that the cephalopods bone is a source to be considered in...

Dugdhika is one of the important raw drug used in Ayurveda. E. thymifolia is used as the genuine source plant of drug Dugdhika, it posses properties like, used for skin disorders, sexual disorders, effective drug for asthma., diarrhoea, dysentery. The present study deals with the comparative study of morphological, anatomical, histochemical characters of E. hirta and E. thymifolia. Two plants show similarities and differences between them at morphological, anatomical and histochemical levels. Morphologically these two plants show differences in many characters. But histological studies of both plants are almost similar. The histochemical study of both plants shows differences. This study helps to identify the genuine plants of the drug Dugdhika for the preparation of Ayurvedic...

Objective: To investigate the effectiveness of Lactobacillus sporogenes in the treatment of acute diarrhoea in paediatric population. Methods: In a prospective randomized open label comparative study, 62 children (1 month– 6 years) admitted to the Medical College Hospital for the treatment of acute diarrhoea, were included. The patients were randomised into two groups, control group (n =31) receiving only fluids and zinc and test group (n =31) receiving probiotic Lactobacillus sporogenes in addition to fluids and zinc. The outcome measures were frequency of diarrhoea, consistency of stools, duration of diarrhoea after hospitalization, duration of hospital stay and side effect profile associated with the use of probiotic. The data was analysed using the SPSS software. Results: Lactobacillus sporogenes group showed statistically significant reduction in the frequency of diarrhoea on second day of treatment (mean ± SD) (Test group: 4.94 ± 2.05, Control group: 6.00 ± 2.25). In addition, a greater improvement in the consistency of stools on the second day of treatment was observed (Test group: 16.1% patients, Control group:...

Traditional medicines in many developing countries rely on the plant phytochemicals as a source of drug in curing many diseases. Tagetes erecta Linn. is an ornamental plant containing valuable therapeutic phytochemicals. In the current investigation, ethanol extraction of the dried flower sample was subjected to column chromatographic separation. Around 185 fractions were separated and recorded with different Rf values. The fractions were analyzed qualitatively and it was proved that the flower sample was rich in tannins, saponins, carbohydrates, alkaloids, quinines, terpenoids, phenols and...

Actinomycetes are versatile and prolific source of microbial natural products with great advantage in medicine and agriculture. Recently there is growing interest in exploring biological active compounds from rare actinomycetes. Usually rare actinomycetes are regarded as strains of actinomycetes whose isolation frequency by conventional methods is much lower than that of Streptomycetes strains. Amycolatopsis orientalis JAR10 rare genera of actinomycetes which have been isolated, characterized and antimicrobial activity against various pathogens have been determined in the present work. The morphological, cultural, genotypical and physiological characteristics of strain JAR10 has been examined by International Streptomyces Project. The bioactive metabolites produced by strain JAR10 were extracted by solvent extraction method and the crude extract obtained was further analyzed against various pathogens. The minimum inhibitory concentration of crude extract obtained from Amycolatopsis orientalis JAR10 was analyzed by broth dilution method and was found to inhibit Staphylococcus aureus at 60 µg/ml indicating the presence of biological active...
