Black pepper (Piper nigrum) is a spice vine crop and which was used as a food preservative and as an essential component in traditional medicines. Moreover it is used also as a spice for curry cooking. The fruits and leaves may be both contains the medicinal activities. First time our concentration on to the fruits only. The fruits were collected and normally dried in the sunlight. The dried fruit was then converted into powder material. Then the powder of black pepper was extracted with ethanol in a soxhlet’s apparatus. The concentrated filtrate was isolated by column chromatography using solvent system-benzene: ethyl acetate (3:1). Again, recrystallization was performed by benzene with a minimum volume of chloroform to give pale yellow crystals of MP. 128-129oC (Reported 130oC). The IR, 1HNR and mass spectra of the pure crystalline compound (A2) were recorded. The mass spectra shows molecular ion M+∙ 284.5 which indicates that the molecular weight of the compound A2 is equal to that of piperinemolecular weight...

Aim: Bleomycin (BLM), a potent anticancer agent widely used in the treatment of cancer is an antibiotic isolated from Streptomyces verticillus. BLM has been reported to cause pulmonary fibrosis that limits the chemotherapeutic efficiency. The present study aims to evaluate the efficacy of the aqueous extract of pomegranate (Punica granatum) against BLM induced pulmotoxicity in rats. Methods: The experimental rats were divided to 5 groups. Aqueous extract of Punica granatum peel at 250 and 500 mg/kg, was administered to rats of group III and IV respectively. The rats were induced with BLM. Group I served as normal control and group II as BLM control. Vitamin C at 250 mg/kg b.wt was administered to group V rats. Results: Treatment with aqueous extract of Punica granatum peel (250 and 500 mg/kg, orally) proved to be protective against BLM induced pulmonary fibrosis by normalizing the levels of glycoproteins (hexose, hexosamine and sialic acid) and by improving the activity of antioxidant enzymes- superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT). The extract also enhanced pulmonary...

The objective of this work was to use a full factorial design and response surface methodology to optimize and prepare fast disintegrating tablets of Itopride hydrochloride (ITOHCl). Tablets were prepared by direct compression technique and evaluated for their drug content, weight variation, hardness, friability, wetting, disintegration time, and in-vitro release. In addition, the optimum formulation was evaluated for taste, mouth feel and in-vivo disintegration time in human volunteers. A 32 full factorial design was employed to evaluate different variables affecting ITOHCl tablets. Furthermore, The response surface methodology was used to analyze the effect of the total amounts of superdisintegrant (SD, X1) and the percentage of sodium starch glycolate (% SSG) in the total amounts of superdisintegrant (SSG, X2) on the % friability (Y1), Disintegration time (Y2) and ITOHCl released after 10 mins (Y3). The increase in the (SD, X1) led to an increase in the % friability while an increase in % SSG led to a decrease in the % friability. The (SD, X1) were found to have a...

Rheumatoid arthritis is one of the most serious medical problems leading to bone and cartilage destruction. The disease affects approximately 1% of the total world population. Mostly the women are affected. The pathogenesis of the disease is still not clearly understood. Free radicals and inflammatory molecules such as TNF-α, IL-1β etc have been recognized as major players in the progression of disease. Several herbal preparations have been reported to combat free radicals and relieve the sufferers of diseases such diabetes, atherosclerosis, asthma etc. Crocus sativus is considered as an anticonvulsant, antidepressant, antispasmodic and diaphoretic agent. Therefore, we planned this study to evaluate anti-inflammatory and antioxidant property of Crocus sativus extract (CSE) towards adjuvant induced arthritis. Arthritis was induced in mice by injecting Freund’s complete adjuvant. Three different doses of Crocus sativus extract (25, 50, 100mg/kg b.w.) were orally administered to the adjuvant induced arthritic mice for 47 days. We observed significant (p<0.05) reduction in TNF-α and IL-1β levels in the mice of CSE-2 and 3 group as compared to...

Aim and Objectives: To study the analgesic activity of telmisartan in graded doses, in tail flick method and acetic acid induced writhing method in rats and mice respectively. Materials and Methods: Analgesic activity of telmisartan was evaluated in graded doses tail flick model (for central action) and acetic acid induced writhing model (for peripheral action) of analgesia. Aspirin & tramadol were used as standard drugs. Results were analyzed by one way ANOVA followed by Bonferroni’s post hoc test. Results: In tail flick method telmisartan showed dose dependent analgesic activity. The tail flick latency time increased from 0 to 60 min. The analgesic activity of telmisartan at dose of 1.5mg/kg was not statistically significant, however it was statistically significant at dose 3mg/kg and 4.5 mg/kg. At the dose of 3mg/kg; telmisartan showed highly significant activity p<0.01 at 30, 60 as well as 90 min with maximum effect at 90min, where as the most significant effect p<0.001 was observed at the dose of 4.5mg/kg at 60 and 90min. In acetic acid...
