The purpose of this research work was to establish mucoadhesive buccal device of Rosuvastatin Calcium(RC) in the form of bilayered tablet. The tablets were prepared using natural gums like Xanthan gum, Tamarid gum, Gellan gum and Chitosan as bioadhesive polymers to impart mucoadhesion as well as permeation enhancement property to the formulation. Ethyl cellulose & magnesium stearate were added to act as an impermeable backing layer which gives unidirectional buccal drug delivery. Buccal devices were evaluated for different parameters such as weight uniformity, content uniformity, thickness, hardness, surface pH, swelling index, ex vivo mucoadhesive strength, ex vivo mucoadhesive time, in vitro drug release, and in vitro drug permeation. The results of study revealed that the formulation containing a combination of polymers like chitosan and natural gums shows suitatble drug permeation rate as well as mucoadhesive strength. So, it can be concluded that buccal mucoadhesive tablet is potential way of delivering Rosuvastatin in order to prevent its extensive first pass metabolism and to improve its...

The present study was carried out to investigate the antihyperglycemic, oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) and antihyperlipidemic (Total cholesterol and triglycerides) effects of the methanolic extract of Stephania japonica (Thunb.) Miers. tenril (MSJT). The MSJT was administered orally as a dose of 250 and 500 mg/kg body weight to alloxan induced hyperglycemic rats and found to reduce blood glucose level significantly (p<0.05). The MSJT also significantly reduce the lipid content which was increased in hyperglycemic rats. The effects of plant extract were compared with standard drug metformin. The phytochemical screening tests indicated that the different constituents such as saponins, tannins, triterpines, alkaloids, flavonoids and glycosides etc. were present in the plant which has antidiabetic and hypolipidemic properties. Thus, this investigation paves the way for plant based antihyperglycemic and antihyperlipidemic treatment and indicates that MSJL have favorable effect in bringing down the severity of hyperglycemia, enhancing antihyperlipidemic activity and also improving glucose tolerance...

Pyrus pashia Buch.-Ham. ex D. Don is distributed in the Himalayan region with great ethnic uses. Leaves of P. pashia are consumed as butter tea beverages by the Monpa community of Tawang, Arunachal Pradesh (India). The pulverized leaves were extracted using accelerated solvent extractor (ASE) in different organic solvents with increasing polarity. The leaf extracts of P. pashia were evaluated for the free radical scavenging activity by 2, 2-Diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) assay and total phenolic content (TPC) were determined by Folin Ciocalteu’s method. The methanolic and water extracts shows strong free radical scavenging activity with IC50 values of 10.81±0.44 µg/ml and 11.57±0.36 µg/ml respectively. The methanolic extract has the highest TPC value of 351.16±0.43 mg/g. The study highlighted the antioxidant potentiality of Pyrus pashia Buch.-Ham. ex D. Donleaves and confirms it as a healthy beverage taken by the Monpa...

Three simple sensitive, rapid, accurate and economical methods were developed for simultaneous estimation of Ciprofloxacin & Ornidazole in bulk and its pharmaceutical formulations. First method was based on the simultaneous equation, second method was based on Q-Analysis (Absorbance ratio method) and third method was based on multicomponent mode. The absorption maxima for Ciprofloxacin and Ornidazole were 272 nm and 319 nm in 0.1 N NaOH respectively. The iso-absorptive point for Ciprofloxacin Hydrochloride and Ornidazole was 292 nm. The calibration curve was linear over the concentration range 2.5 to 22.5 µg/ml of Ciprofloxacin & Ornidazole. The methods had been validated statistically and by recovery study. It can be used in the simultaneous estimation of Ciprofloxacin and Ornidazole in bulk drugs and its pharmaceutical preparations in a routine...

The common usage of Galium spp. in the Ethiopian traditional medicine, as described in few documentations, are generally related to diseases associated with the nervous system, the immune system, infections and inflammation. Preliminary phytochemical and antimicrobial screening on extracts of the aerial parts of Galium spurium (subspecies africanum) was done in order to partly rationalize some of the claimed traditional uses of the plant. Results of the preliminary antimicrobial screening on extracts of G. spurium showed only weak antibacterial activity. The preliminary phytochemical screening revealed the presence of flavonoids and phenolics compounds. As phenolics and flavonoids are known to display multiple health benefits, the claimed traditional uses of the plant could be justified more through the possible pharmacological effects of these components than its weak antibacterial...
