Clitoria ternatea L. (Family: Fabaceae) is being used in traditional medicine for the treatment of severe bronchitis and asthma. So the aim of study was to evaluate antioxidant and antiasthmatic activity of ethanol extract of Clitoria ternatea roots. The present investigation was undertaken to evaluate the histamine-induced bronchospasm of alcoholic extract of Clitorea ternatea Linn. roots in experimental animals. Bronchodilator activity of aqueous extract of C. ternatea studied on the histamine aerosol induced bronchospasm in wister rats. Treatment with alcoholic extract of clitorea ternatea (400 mg/kg, p.o) showed significant protection against histamine aerosol induced broncho-spasm in wister rats. The results of the histamine- induced bronchospasm paradigms demonstrate bronchospasmolytic activity of ethanolic extract of clitorea ternatea (400 mg/kg, p.o.). Clitorea ternarea shows 47.45 % protection against histamine induced bronchoconstriction in rats. These results suggest that aqueous extract of C. tenatea has not only bronchodilating activity but also decreases bronchial hyperreactivity by decreasing the infiltration of inflammatory cells in the airway and inhibition of release of histamine like mediators from the mast cell...

Alstonia scholaris (L.) R. Br. is a plant of family Apocynaceae and has a great medicinal importance. It is widely used by tribal people to treat various diseases and ailments. The present communication deals with the organoleptic and preliminary physico-phytochemical studies of the stem bark of the plant. The organoleptic study was done according to the W.H.O. guidelines for medicinal plants. The physicochemical parameters viz. loss on drying, ash values and extractive values were calculated. Soxhlet extraction of the powdered plant material was done with 80% ethanol and then partitioned with petroleum ether, ethyl acetate and n-butanol subsequently. The percentage yields of different solvent fractions were calculated and then they were subjected to preliminary phytochemical screening which indicated the presence of alkaloids, carbohydrates, tannins, terpenoids, saponins, flavonoids, steroids and fixed oils and...

The objective of this study was to design and evaluate oral sustained drug delivery system for Metoprolol succinate using pH sensitive polymer HPMC and sodium alginate and to evaluate its efficacy in reducing the hypertension. The drug filler blend was mixed with various concentrations of hydrophilic polymers such as HPMC, sodium alginate and combination of both the matrixing agents. The tablets were prepared by wet granulation method. Matrix tablets were evaluated for weight variation, content uniformity, friability, hardness, thickness, swelling index, and in vitro dissolution. The assays of different formulations were determined and the drug content was found between 85-115%. The weight variation was observed to be within the prescribed limits for each formulation. In-Vitro drug release studies carried out with different formulation tablets in 0.1N HCl for 2hrs, pH 6.8 phosphate buffer for 12hrs. Up to 2 hr study the formulation shows low release in gastric medium (0.1N HCl). From the 2 hr up to 12 hr study percentage of drug release was increased in intestinal fluid (pH...

The extracts of the prop roots of Pandanus fascicularis Lam (Family: Pandanaceae) is claimed as an antidiuretic by some traditional practitioners. However, the validity of this claim has not been scientifically proven or refuted. The aim of this study was to evaluate the antidiuretic potential of ethanol and aqueous extracts of prop roots of P. fascicularis in rats following oral administration. Ethanol and aqueous extracts were prepared from P. facicularis by percolation and cold maturation, respectively. Furosemide was used as a diuretic agent to induce diuresis. Vasopressin (ADH) was used as a standard. The results demonstrated both the ethanol and aqueous extracts of P. facicularis and ADH significantly impaired the total urine output. However, antidiuretic potential of ethanolic extract was similar to that of ADH. The extracts caused a significant decrease in natriuresis and kaliuresis. From this study, we can conclude that ethanol extract of prop roots of Pandanus fascicularis has beneficial effects on anti diuretic activity. It has the potential to impart therapeutic effect in...

BACKGROUND: Self-medication is the selection and use of medicines by individuals to treat selfrecognised illnesses or symptoms and an important initial response to illnesses if successfully used. The objective of this study was to assess knowledge, attitude and practice of self medication among Medical Sciences Faculty students of Jimma University. METHODS: A cross sectional study was conducted in Medical sciences Faculty students in 2009.The faculty and the three schools were selected by lottery method .Then, within the faculty respective number of students for each School was determined by proportion from the total sample size. Data was collected randomly from each School using self administered questionnaires and analyzed using SPSS version 16.0 RESULTS: From a total of 403 (100%) participants,95 (45.89%) students practiced self medication in the past two months for commonly perceived illnesses such as headache 35 (36.85%), abdominal pain 29 (30.55%) and cough 33 (23.16%) using mainly analgesics 40(49.38%) and antibiotics 29 (35.80%) mostly from drug retail outlets 88(92.63). Fifty seven (60.00%) respondents can recall the dose, frequency...
