Even if there are so many diagnostic tests available for the detection of tuberculosis, still the diagnosis of TB is a challenging problem in this decade due to differences or non-specificity in symptoms, radiological signs, false negatives, and positives. Chest X-ray can identify the location, area, and morphology of lesions; hence analyzed the pattern and relation of chest X-ray and Gene expert results. This was a retrospective observational study conducted in the Ernakulam district of Kerala, India. The study included both drug-resistant and sensitive patients in two groups from the period 2016-2019 and 2017-2019. The study excluded HIV patients from both groups. Only professionally interpreted data were entered into the study analysis. All privacy and confidentiality were ensured throughout the study under direct observation of the district TB center. The left lung was more affected in DS-TB (76.47%), and the right side was more infected in DR-TB (65%). The predominant infiltration (24.21%), cavity (22.22%), and Non-homogenous opacity (26.47%) were seen in the left middle zone, whereas consolidation (24.63%) was...

Objective: Mako (Solanum nigrum L.), Black Nightshade in English, belongs to the family Solanaceae is an edible plant. The whole plant is used as a green source of vegetables and berries as a fruit. It is a good source of antioxidant and has potent anti-inflammatory, diuretic, lithotriptic, wound healing properties. Unani scholars have advocated the berries to treat many renal ailments, including renal failure. The aim of this study was to evaluate the nephroprotective activity of the berries of Mako on gentamicin-induced nephrotoxicity in rats to authenticate the traditional claims. Materials and Methods: Wistar rats were divided into eight groups of six animals in each, group I – control, group II toxicant (gentamicin) and III–VIII were high dose (800 mg/Kg) of methanolic extract (ME), low dose (200 mg/Kg) of ME, Petroleum soluble fraction, chloroform soluble fraction, water-soluble fraction and water-insoluble fraction of ME, respectively. Test drugs were administered from day 1 to 8 along with toxicant from day 4 to 8. Results: At the end of the study, blood...

Seaweeds are potential sources of bioactive molecules. They are known to be rich sources of proteins, carbohydrates, lipids, vitamins, minerals, and other secondary metabolites. To evaluate the presence of these compounds in marine macroalgae collected from Veraval coast of Gujarat, present studies was carried out. The methanol extract of six macroalgae species (Ulva lactuca, Ulva faciata, Acanthophora dendroides, Gracilaria corticata, Padina tetrastromatica, and Cystoseira indica) was subjected to LCMS/MS analysis which suggested presence of amino acids, sugar, vitamins and phytohormones in algae extracts. The aminoacids and vitamins present in Ulva lactuca (betaine, L-methionine, L-asparagine), Ulva faciata ( L-arginine, L-proline, L-histidine, L-valine, L-Threonine, Dihydrofolic acid), Acanthophora dendroides (L-glutamic acid, L-alanine, L-serine, L-phenylalanine, L-tyrosine, nicotinic acid), Gracilaria coeticata (L-canavanine, L-isoleucine, and L-cysteine) and Padina tetrastromatica (L-Aspartic acid, L-leucine) can be utilized for the development of dietary supplements and proteinaceous food for domestic animals. The sugar present in Ulva faciata (glucosamine), Acanthophora dedroides (D-xylose, D-mannose, D-fructose), Gracilaria corticata (D-Rhamnose, fucose, D-galactose), Padina tetrastromatica (D-glucuronic acid, D-glucose, D-mannuronic acid), and Cystosera indica (arabinose,...

Oral administration of 131I to the patients of differentiated thyroid cancer is routinely used to ablate remnant thyroid tissue or metastasis. In 30% of the patients, permanent salivary gland damage due to therapeutic 131I exposure results in xerostomia, affecting their quality of life. Amifostine is the only standard FDA-approved radio protect ant available for damage control, albeit associated with side effects such as hypotension and allergic reactions. The present study was carried out to compare the radioprotective effect of O. sanctum extract with that of a standard radio protectant, amifostine in salivary glands of the rabbits exposed to high dose (1GBq) of 131I internal radiation exposure. The study parameters included were salivary amylase, serum SGOT and SGPT, haematological parameters, 99m Technetium pertechnetate scintigraphy study, histopathology and ultrastructure of the salivary gland. The experimental rabbits were sacrificed after 6 months of 131I exposure. The experimental observations, majorly histopathological and electron microscopic are suggestive of better preservation of cell morphology and ultrastructure after O. santum as well as amifostine pre supplementation....

Urena lobata is used by traditional practitioners for treating external wounds. A preclinical study was conducted to evaluate the efficacy of the ointment formulations containing ethanolic extract of Urena lobata (EO) (5%) and nanosized extract (NO) of U. lobata (5%) for their wound healing activity by assessing wound contraction, tensile strength, superoxide dismutase, catalase, reduced glutathione, myeloperoxidase, hydroxyproline, lipid peroxidation and his to pathological studies in experimentally-induced open wounds in Swiss albino rats. Quercetin, an active principle of the formulation, was estimated qualitatively and quantitatively through HPLC studies. Topical application of NO and EO formulations promoted faster reepithelialization, wound contraction and maximized tensile strength, increased SOD, catalase activities and GSH, hydroxyproline levels with lower myeloperoxidase and lipid peroxidation in comparison with control. Histopathological studies revealed lesser inflammatory cell proliferation, degeneration, with marked fibroblast proliferation and collagen maturation than the control group. Results indicate that both NO and EO formulations showed benefits in the management of wounds when compared to the standard povidone...
