Objective: To ensure the basic principles of drug utilization and the use and safety of blood thinning agents in tertiary care hospital. Experimental design: The study included 224 patients’ and was conducted in a tertiary care hospital and we were focused on to find out the drug-drug interactions of anticoagulants, antiplatelet, and thrombolytic agents, to study the major area involvement for blood thinning agents. The newly admitted case charts to the medicine ward will randomly be selected on a daily basis and will be reviewed for the medication safety compliance. Interpretation and Conclusion: Appropriate use of anticoagulant therapy and any deviation from the guidelines to a large extent also depends on patient characteristics and concomitant therapy patient is receiving. Some major complications are seen with oral anticoagulants which emphasize the need for a constant monitor and patient education. The need for dosage adjustments in different diagnostic situations or specific populations is very crucial. To increase patient education, an alert was built to notify pharmacists to educate patients on these...

L-arginase (EC 3.5.3.1) is a therapeutic enzyme which catalyzes the hydrolysis of L-arginine to L-ornithine and urea. L-arginase is of keen interest due to its significance as an anti-cancer mediator against auxotrophic cancers. This enzyme is widely distributed and expressed in organisms like fungi, plants, non-chordates, and chordates, however very scarce report is available for L-arginase from bacteria. Therefore, the present study was aimed to isolate L-arginase producing bacteria from soil. Soil samples were collected from different locations in and around Karnatak University campus, Dharwad, Karnataka, India. L-arginase activity was confirmed by rapid plate assay screening using minimal arginine agar media and estimating the urea level colorimetrically. Among the sixty-eight isolates, twenty-nine of them were positive for the L-arginase production, but, the most potent isolate was selected, characterized, and identified in our study. The isolate was identified as Pseudomonas sp. strain PV1 (GenBank accession number...

Curcuma rotunda, locally known as temu kunci, has been reported containing flavonoids in its rhizome that exhibit antioxidant activity. This study aimed to isolate secondary metabolites from the polar fraction of acetone extract from C. rotunda rhizome and to determine their antioxidant activities. The secondary metabolites were isolated using various chromatography methods yielded two fractions. Identification of both isolated fractions using LC-MS showed a dominant peak on the retention time of 13.30 and 11.30 minutes suspected pinostrobin (chalcone) and pinocembrin (flavanone), respectively. Antioxidant activity towards DPPH of crude extract showed moderate activity with IC50 of 125.75 ppm. However, the antioxidant activities from both isolated fractions could not be determined due to less than 50% of its inhibition percentage. It can be suggested that other specific phenolic compounds in C. rotunda corresponding to its radical scavenging activity....

Background: Hypertension is one of the major risk factors for stroke, heart attack, heart failure, and kidney failure, thereby cause of deaths and disability worldwide. The most predominant type of HTN is essential hypertension (HTN). Unani scholars mentioned clinical manifestations and management of hypertension and have documented it under the context of ‘Imtila.’ The drug Sankhaholi (Evolvulus alsinoides Linn.) is one of the widely prescribed medicines for the management of essential hypertension in Unani medicine. Material and Method: Present clinical study was carried out to evaluate the efficacy and safety of Sankhaholi (Evolvulus alsinoides Linn.) in the management of stage-1 essential hypertension. Newly diagnosed 41 patients of Essential Hypertension (22 patients were in the test group and 19 patients in the control group) were enrolled and their clinical, as well as hematological parameters, were recorded at baseline, 21st day and 42nd day. All the patients in the test group were provided with the test drug 3 g powder of Sankhaholi which is to be taken twice a day for...

Clustered regularly interspaced palindromic repeats are the centerpiece of a robust adaptive bacterial immune system that forms the basis for the CRISPR-Cas9 genetic engineering technology. CRISPR-associated protein-9 (Cas9) is part of this immune system that seeks out, cuts, and degrades viral DNA. By taking advantage of the CRISPR-Cas9 system, a tool has been developed to delete or insert DNA into target genes in bacterial cells or mammalian cells for obtaining cells with desired traits. In this study, we used the CRISPR-Cas9 system for engineering the genome of a non-pathogenic, laboratory strain of bacteria Escherichia coli. We introduced a mutation in the gene of the bacteria which converted its phenotype from sensitivity to the antibiotic streptomycin to resistance to streptomycin; thus allowing the bacteria to grown on streptomycin containing plates. We also investigated different transformation conditions to determine which condition gave the maximum number of transformants, which reflects the efficiency of the CRISPR-Cas9 genome editing...
