Free radicals and reactive oxygen species (ROS) production above basal levels cause irreversible damage to the cell membrane, DNA and other cellular structures by oxidizing lipids, proteins and nucleic acids resulting in dysfunction of biomolecules within cells and, finally, cell death. These free radical-induced reactions are ascertained to play multiple roles in degenerative or pathological events especially carcinogenesis. Apart from the radical scavenging activity, the antioxidant potential of a test compound or herbal preparation is also based on their protective effect against oxidant-induced damage to cellular biomolecules. In the present study, the protective effect of the methanolic extract of the three different flowers of Caesalpinia pulcherrima (yellow, pink and orange) against oxidative stress-induced damage to biomolecules like lipids, DNA and proteins were analyzed in both cell-free systems and intact cells. Herbal drugs are prescribed widely as an anti-coccidial agent even when their biologically active compounds are unknown, because of their effectiveness, lesser side effects, and relatively low cost. So, in the current study, a poly-herbal formulation was used to find out its effect as an anti-coccidial effect. Zinc deficiency is prevalent worldwide. The present study deals with the effect of dietary zinc deficiency on erythrocytes of Wistar rats. Male Wistar rats (40-50 g) were divided into 3 groups: control (ZC) fed 100 μg/g zinc; pair fed (PF) fed 100 μg/g zinc but the diet given was based on the diet consumed the previous day and zinc deficient (ZD) fed 1 μg/g zinc. The experiment was carried out for 2, 4 and 6 weeks. Erythrocyte cell suspension revealed significant increase in catalase activity and decrease in glutathione concentration after zinc deficiency. A significant (P<0.05) increase in erythrocyte lysate superoxide dismutase, glutathione peroxidase and glutathione-s-transferase was observed while glutathione reductase decreased significantly after zinc deficiency. Rosella (Hibiscus sabdariffa L.) calyx traditionally used to treat various diseases. There is limited evidence based could be found including the efficacy and safety. The present study was aimed to investigate the effects of subchronic administration of Rosella calyx extract on the renal function of female Sprague Dawley (SD) rats. The rosella calyx was extracted by 70% ethanol and evaporated with a rotary evaporator to get concentrated extract. The Sprague Dawley rats were randomly divided into five groups including control group which was given CMC Na 0.5% and treated groups were administered orally with the extract of 50, 100, 200 mg/kg bw for 35 days. This study was aimed at formulating topically applied Chlorpheniramine maleate gel (CPM gel). Combined effects of propylene glycol and polyethylene glycol as permeation enhancers were investigated using response surface methodology. The formulated gels were characterized for various formulation attributes including viscosity, homogeneity, pH, spreadability and accelerated stability studies (40 ± 0.5 °C / 75% RH). In-vitro studies were also conducted using silicone sheets and rat skin as model membranes. The permeation study revealed that an increase in the drug permeation across model membranes was due to an increasing concentration of enhancers. Based on formulation attributes and permeation parameters, FM6 was identified as optimized formulation. The drug release from optimized formulation followed the first order release kinetics. Draize’s skin irritation test was conducted on healthy human volunteers to elucidate the safety profile of the formulations.
