Vitex negundo, commonly called Nirgundi, is one of the widely investigated medicinal plants of India. The present study were planned to compare different parts, i.e. leaves, stems and roots of V. negundo for antianxiety activity using elevated plus maze model. Petroleum ether (60 – 80 °C), chloroform, ethanol and aqueous extracts of these parts were prepared and evaluated for anti-anxiety activity. Among the different parts compared, only the roots showed significant anti-anxiety activity. Chloroform (400 mg/kg) and ethanol (100 mg/kg) extracts of the roots showed maximum significant anti-anxiety activity, compared to that of diazepam (2...

Prostaglandins (PG) are commonly used in neonates with cyanotic congenital heart diseases to keep the ductus arteriosus patent. The definite treatment for these conditions is surgery. It is occasionally used for longer duration (weeks to months) in preterm babies. Reversible cortical hyperostosis is a relatively recently recognized side effect of prolonged prostaglandin therapy. We describe the case of an infant presenting this complication secondary to prolonged use of PGE1, with typical and extensive radiological findings. The enzymes (prostaglandin 15-OH dehydrogenase & prostaglandin -13 reductase) that catalyze the degradation of prostaglandins are widely distributed in many vascular beds including those of the spleen, kidney, adipose tissue, intestine, liver, testicles and lungs. PGE is normally rapidly inactivated by these tissues, particularly during passage through the lungs.18 However, infants with cyanotic congenital heart diseases that cause decreased pulmonary blood flow and reduced clearance of PGE may have a higher systemic concentration of PGE. In addition, these patients often receive pharmacologic doses of PGE to maintain the patency of the ductus arteriosus. The...

Persimmon (Diospyros kaki Linn.), which belongs to the Ebenaceae family, have numerous bioactive compounds such as polyphenols, dietary fiber, carotenoids and minerals. This fruit possesses hypolipidemic and antioxidant properties and can be used in anti-atherosclerosis diets. The present paper reveals the phytochemical screening, Antioxidant, Anti-inflammatory activity and GC-MS Spectral analysis of the isolated fatty acids compounds of the plant Diospyros kaki. From the Antioxidant and Anti-inflammatory activity the chloroform fraction of ethanolic extract showed the good activity and proceeded for isolation. Six fatty acid compounds were isolated from the plant Diospyros kaki and analyzed using Gas chromatography-Mass Spectrometry. From the analysis 13 compounds were identified by comparing their retention time and peak area with that of literature and interpretation of mass spectra. The major phytoconstituents were Spiro [(tricyclo [6.2.2.0(2, 7)] dodeca and 1- monolinoleoylglycerol trimethylsilyl ether. Hence this study creates a platform to screen many bioactive components to treat many...

Background and aim: Spiroazetidin-2-ones and furans are commonly used as anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, anti-inflammatory, cardiovascular activities, anticancer, antiparkinson agents etc. The purpose of this study was to perform virtual toxicity studies of the synthesized compounds 1-(substitutedphenyl)-3-chloro-5,9-bis(furan-2-ylmethylidene)-1-azaspiro[3.5]nonan-2-ones (3a-3h). Materials and methods: Computational toxicology and mutagenicity profiles of these compounds were generated by using TOPKAT 6.1 (Toxicity Prediction Komputer Assisted Technology version 6.1). The molecular structure of the query compound was given as a SMILES string and a desired TOPKAT predictor was selected, then TOPKAT automatically conducts analysis of the query compound. Results: According to TOPKAT 6.1 model the compounds 3a – 3h are non-mutagenic and devoid of aerobic biodegradability. The computed Rat oral LD50 values for the compounds 3a – 3h ranged from 1.1g/kg to 115.0mg/kg. These high LD50 values suggest higher safety of these compounds. The computed probability of skin irritation for all compounds was found to be 1.000 and the probability for the carcinogenicity was found to be 0.950-1.000. Conclusion: By using computerized statistical methodology, more promising molecules can...

This study was aimed to investigate the biochemical influence of aqueous extracts of roots, stem and leaves of Zizyphus mauritiana (ZM) on silica induced toxicity in rats, with changes in inflammatory markers in liver and kidney. To test the preventive effect of extracts of Zizyphus mauritiana on development of silica induced toxicity in wistar albino rats, animals were treated simultaneously with intraperitoneal administration of silica and oral feeding of extracts, for 21 days. At the end of the experiment, blood samples were withdrawn for biochemical analysis. The results revealed that animals administered with silica and simultaneous feeding of extracts of root, stem and leaves of Zizyphus mauritiana had a significant effect and decreased serum levels of ALT, AST, ALP, urea, uric acid, creatinine and LDH, as well as pro-inflammatory cytokines TNF-α and IL-6 as compared with normal control group. Zizyphus mauritiana extracts treated groups had shown recoupment in the body weight which was found decreased in only silica treated animals. In conclusion, this study indicated that extracts of bark...
