Shorea robusta Gaertn., commonly called as Sal tree, is revered as a sacred tree by most of the tribals of Jharkhand, India. They do not worship it rather believe it to the abode of tribal goddess. The plant parts are used as a remedy against various ailments in combination with other ingredients. Preliminary phytochemical screening of the whole plant exhibited the presence of high concentration of bioactive components. The plant extracts also exhibited good antibacterial activities. The HPLC and GC-MS analysis showed the presence of very high concentrations of several phytochemicals such as Trimethylsilyl 3-methyl-4-[(trimethylsilyl)oxy] benzoate, D-Mannitol, Sorbital, Phytol, Hexamethylcyclotrisiloxane, β-Caryophyllene, 1,2,4-Benzenetriol, etc. which are pharmaceutically and industrially very important. Several of these phytochemicals have been determined to be anti-cancerous and antioxidant, antidiarrheal, anti-dysenteric, antibacterial, stimulant, diuretic, styptic and anti-gonorrhoeal. The study revealed that the sacred tree of Jharkhand could be a real blessing for the world in order to harvest several phytochemicals in large quantities and to produce drugs at the low cost to heal several human...

A simple, rapid, reproducible and low cost High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) method was developed and used to assess the quality of some brands of metronidazole tablets being marketed in Abuja, Nigeria. Parameters such as assay for the content of active ingredient, dissolution, disintegration, hardness, friability, and microbial load were evaluated using the methods described in the British Pharmacopoeia. Our results show that, a good linear relationship between Peak Area Response and Concentration in the range of 1.5–50μg/mL and a regression coefficient value of 999 was obtained. The method was found to be very sensitive with values of 25.0 and 15.6ng/mL obtained as Limits of Quantification (LOQ) and Detection (LOD) respectively. The result also showed that all but one (T5) of the eight brands evaluated met the British Pharmacopeia (BP) specifications for weight uniformity test, disintegration test and dissolution test. The brand T5, which failed the weight variation test, equally failed the dissolution test. This product was found to have released more than 110 % of the drug content...

The present study evaluates the hypoglycemic and hypolipidemic effects of supplementation of cell suspension of Spirulina platensis (SP) in alloxan (AXN) induced hyperglycemic mice. Diabetes was induced by intra-peritoneal administration of AXN. Mice with blood glucose level above 200 mg/dl were divided into Group I (control), Group II (diabetic control), Group III (diabetic control mice fed with SP), and Group IV (control mice fed with SP). General physiology, fasting blood glucose level, oral glucose tolerance test, liver glycogen content and lipid profile were recorded in test subjects. In hyperglycemic mice, a significant (P < 0.05) fractional increase in food intake (41.13%), water consumption (190.56%), fasting blood glucose level (273.2%), total cholesterol (144.12%), triglyceride (124.58%), very low density lipoprotein (124.59%) and low density lipoprotein (265.4%) with concomitant decrease in body weight (25.78%), liver glycogen (10.57%) and high density lipoprotein (37.74%) when compared with control at the end of the experiment but recuperation in these parameters were observed (P < 0.05) when subjected to SP treatment. SP resulted in fractional increased...

Lactobacillus plantarum culture supernatants (LAPS) have antimicrobial, pro‐healing and anesthetic properties, so our medical team applied whole cultures and LAPS in chronic wounds with encouraging results. Metabolites responsible for LAPS properties and its action mechanism were previously determined. Objective: to design methods and culture media to increase the production of LAPS metabolites and optimize it´s therapeutic effectiveness. Modifications in MRS broth composition were made and L. plantarum was cultivated in the resulting different media with different physicochemical conditions to obtain modified supernatants (LAPSm). Antimicrobial and anti-biofilm activity (crystal violet) of LAPSm on strains typically isolated from chronic wounds (Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis and Serratiamarcescens), was tested. Concentration of barbiturates in LAPSm was quantified by GCMS and its relative anesthetic potency in healthy volunteers was evaluated. DNAase and auto inducers type 2biological activity in LAPSm were quantified. In addition, a safety assessment of LAPSm application on healthy skin of 200 volunteers was performed. LAPSm obtained from media with high concentrations of yeast extract possessed the greatest anesthetic power....

Myocardial infarction develops due to ischemia induced oxidative stress. Averrhoa Carambola fruit (ACF) is reported to possess strong antioxidant activity which may protect the heart against isoproterenol (ISO) induced myocardial infarction (MI) in rats. To evaluate this activity Averrhoa carambolafruit extract (ACFE) (200mg/kg & 400mg/kg, p.o) was administered to male wistar rats (180-250g) for 21days. At the end of this period, all the rats except rats of normal control group were administered ISO 85mg/kg intraperitonially, for 2 consecutive days to induce MI. After 48 hrs, rats were sacrificed and the level of cardiac biomarker enzymes like cardiac troponin-T (cTn-T), creatinine kinase (CK-MB) and lactatedehydrogenase1(LDH1) in serum were estimated. Also antioxidant parameters likeglutathione (GSH), malondialdehyde (MDA), catalase and superoxide dismutase (SOD) were estimated in heart tissue homogenate and histopathology of heart tissue was performed. Our results suggest that pretreatment of animals with ACFE maintain near normal levels of cardiac biomarker enzymes and antioxidant enzymes in both treatment groups (ACFE 200mg/kg, 400mg/kg) when compared to ISO treated group. Histopathological findings of...
