This study aims to compare the Parkinsonism behavior induced by two drugs: Tacrine (9-amino-1,2,3,4-tetrahydroaminoacridine hydrochloride hydrate and MPTP (1-methyl, 4-phenyl 1,2,3,6 tetrahydropyrolidine) using a Force Plate Actimeter (FPA). 25 C57BL/6 black mice were equally divided into two groups for 5mg/kg tacrine and 30mg/kg MPTP experiment. Both groups contained sham, 5mg/kg tacrine or 30mg/kg MPTP group and sinemet group (oral administration of 10mg/kg sinemet (levodopa:carbidopa in 4:1) prior to intraperitoneal injection of 5mg/kg tacrine or 30mg/kg MPTP). Mice were immediately kept inside FPA to record their behavior. Distance travelled, bout of low mobility (BLM) and power spectra of parkinsonian symptoms shown by both drugs were computed. Both neurotoxins reduced the motor abilities of mice in comparison with sham. Oral treatment of sinemet improved their disability. According to power spectra analysis, tacrine had only one significant narrow peak from 10-12 Hz while MPTP exhibited one to four peaks from 8 to 12 Hz. This might be because the behavior expected from tacrine is lateral movement of jaw (facial part) whilst that...

The malignant tumors of ovary are a group of disease with varying clinical and biological behavior. It is fifth leading cause of death from cancer in women and the leading cause of death from gynecological cancer. This retrospective study has been undertaken to analyze patients of epithelial ovarian cancers. These cases were analyzed for various features like age, stage at presentation, histological type, and treatment pattern. Eighty seven patients with ovarian cancer registered at department of Radiotherapy -II, Pt. BDS PGIMS, Rohtak, Haryana from January 2010 to December 2011 have been evaluated in this retrospective study. Histopathological analysis showed 71(82%) cases of epithelial tumors, 5 cases (6%) of sex cord stromal tumor and 11 (13 %) of germ cell tumors. Among the individual tumors serous tumors were the commonest 51%, followed by 18% mucinous carcinoma and 20% undifferentiated carcinoma. The peak incidence was in 5th – 6th decades. Most of the patients were referred after surgery. Surgery performed was TAH & BSO in almost all patients. All patients were...

Blood Pressure (BP) is defined as the product of the cardiac output (CO) and Total Peripheral Resistance (TPR).Hypertension is defined by persistent elevation of arterial blood pressure. Any drug that is indicated for decreasing/normalizing the elevated blood pressure is considered as an Anti-Hypertensive drug. Objective: To assess the utilization pattern of anti-hypertensive agents in the General Medicine department of The Oxford Medical College, Hospital and Research Center, Bangalore. Methodology: The study was Simple Prospective Observational study which was carried out for a period of six months. Results: In the study period, 200 hypertensive cases were collected. Of these, 134 (67%) were males and 66 (33%) were females who underwent anti-hypertensive therapy. Among the various anti-hypertensive drugs, only 6 major classes were used in the study sample. They were Diuretics (Ds), Calcium Channel Blockers (CCBs), Angiotensin Receptor Blockers (ARBs), Beta Adrenergic Blockers (BABs), Alpha Adrenergic Blockers (AABs) and Angiotensin Converting Enzyme Inhibitors (ACEIs). Diuretics were used the highest in 112 (40.14%) prescriptions and AABs in 7 (2.50%) prescriptions being the...

The Vitex negundo, which is traditional Indian medicine, has been used for treatment of various diseases. A simple, sensitive, precise and accurate RP-HPLC method has been developed for the analysis of Vitex negundo L. samples and its polyherbal formulations for their Betulinic acid content. The extraction was checked using different solvents like methanol, chloroform, 95% ethanol, acetone and dichloromethane. It was found chloroform was good extraction solvent that allowed extraction of Betulinic acid with highest content. The method involves RP C18 column with methanol-acetonitrile-water (90:5:5 % v/v/v) pH 2.5 adjusted with ortho phosphoric acid as mobile phase and UV detection at 270 nm. The flow rate was 1.3 ml/min. The retention time was 2.29 min. The linearity range was 5-30 μg/ml. The method was validated for linearity range, precision, LOD, LOQ, robustness and accuracy. Mean recovery was 99.16-100.76 %. The method was successfully applied for the quantification of Betulinic acid in leaves, seeds of Vitex negundo L. and its polyherbal formulations. The results demonstrated that the content of Betulinic...

Wheatgrass is one grass that has been demonstrated to be of particular use to humans as a nutritional source of vitamins, enzymes, minerals, trace minerals and chlorophyll in addition to its various health benefits. Wheat grass in powder form is a method for preserving wheat grass nutrients with long shelf life and use of wheat grass powder is more convenient than wheat grass juice. Objective: To estimate the antioxidant properties of wheat grass powder obtained by different drying methods. Research Design: Different drying methods used for preparation of wheat grass powder were 1) Hot air oven drying [50˚C, 6 hr and 60˚C, 5hr] 2) Microwave drying [600W, 15 min and 800 W, 10 min] 3) Vacuum oven drying [50˚C, 25kPa, 6 hr]. For estimation of the antioxidant properties of wheat grass powder samples, chlorophyll content, Total Phenol Content and % Anti-Radical Activity were measured. Result: In the quantitative analysis of antioxidant component, microwave dried wheat grass powder samples [600W, 15 min] had highest mean value of total phenol content...
