Seaweed consumption is becoming more popular in Asian population especially the red seaweed, Kappaphycus alvarezii (K. alvarezii). However, there are few reported studies on the safety of K. alvarezii for consumption in Malaysia. This study focuses on the in vivo evaluation of toxicity and heavy metals of K. alvarezii performed in albino rats. K. alvarezii were sent for heavy metal analysis while methanolic extracts of K. alvarezii were administered orally to albino rats (2000mg/kg) daily for a total of 28 days according to Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) guidelines. The water level and feed consumption of both groups were observed daily. At day 28th the control and experimental group of rats were sacrificed, blood and organs such as kidney and liver were collected and sent for haematology and biochemical analysis. There was low to no detectable concentration of heavy metals such as arsenic, iron and zinc in K. alvarezii. One of the major obstacles to the successful chemotherapy towards several cancers is multidrug resistance of human cancer cells to anti-cancer drugs. An important contributor to multidrug resistance is the human multidrug resistance protein-1 transporter (MRP1), which is an efflux pump of the ABC (ATP binding cassette) superfamily. Thus, highly efficacious, third generation MRP1 inhibitors, like tariquidar analogues, are promising inhibitors of multidrug resistance and are under clinical trials. To maximize the efficacy of MRP1 inhibitors and to reduce systemic toxicity, it is important to limit the exposure of MRP1 inhibitors and anticancer drugs to normal tissues and to increase their co-localization with tumor cells. The present investigation studied a novel bilayer tablet having extended release of rosuvastatin calcium (RSTCa) and immediate Release of fenofibrate (FB) in different polymers using wet granulation techniques. Granules were characterized by fourier-transformed Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR), differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC), as well as by content uniformity, in-vitro dissolution studies and release kinetics. Selected granular system was subjected to bilayer tablet preparation by direct compression. Compressed tablets were evaluated for drug content, weight variation, friability, hardness, thickness, %assay and in-vitro dissolution studies. Prepared tablets were then coated and coated bilayer tablets were evaluated for the same. Functional groups of RSTCa and FB were retained in respective granules, suggesting absence of chemical interaction with any of the excipients used in the preparation of granules. Absence of specific peaks in physical mixtures revealed that FB has been completely converted to molecular form. Objectives: To know the effects of chewing the fennel and cardamom seeds on plaque and salivary pH. Materials and Methods: 50 subjects (aged 18-60 years) attending V.S dental College and Hospital who gave consent to participate were recruited for this clinical study. Subjects were randomized in to two groups for chewing fennel and cardamom seeds. Salivary pH and plaque PH at baseline and immediately after chewing seeds for 5 minutes and after 10 min was measured using calibrated glass combination electrode and analysed by ANOVA. Results: The mean salivary PH scores at baseline, immediately and 10 minutes after chewing fennel seeds was 7.1, 7,3 and 7.5 (p value 0.001). The mean salivary PH scores at baseline, immediately and 10 minutes after chewing cardamom seeds was 7.4 , 7.6 , 7.76 (p<0.05). Microalgal like Chlorella vulgaris, being a unicellular green algae, is been widely studied for nitrogen and phosphorus removal and as potential feedstock for biodiesel production. This not only saves water from eutrophication but also becomes a good source of biodiesel. Hence, if two approaches are combined we can overcome the major challenge of both eutrophication and energy crisis. In the present study we have examined the effect of decreasing Nitrogen and phosphorus concentration in medium on growth, biomass and lipid content of C. vulgaris. Significant decrease in growth and biomass was observed with the decrease of nitrogen and phosphorus concentration in the medium from (1.5g/l to 0.0g/l) and (0.04g/l to 0.0g/l) respectively.
