It is well known that main sources of Vitamin D are sun exposure and diet. There is a gap in our knowledge about the contribution of these factors to Vitamin D level among autistic children in Egypt. Aim: To determine Vitamin D dietary intake and sun exposure and their impact on vitamin D level. Methods and procedures: Serum Vitamin D levels were measured in 42 autistic and 40 healthy matched children. Dietary Vitamin D intake and sun exposure hours were collected using an adapted pre-validated food frequency questionnaire. Vitamin D intake was compared with recommended dietary intake (600 IU). Results and outcomes: Autistic children had significantly lower serum levels of 25- hydroxy Vitamin D than healthy children (P < 0.001) with 54.7% and 28.6% being Vitamin D deficient and insufficient, respectively. Dietary Vitamin D intake of both groups was significantly lower than recommended dietary intake. No correlations between serum Vitamin D level and dietary Vitamin D intake or Childhood Autism Rating Scale. Conclusion and implications: Vitamin D deficiency was...

Cancer is a global problem. However, in low-income and developing countries, the expenditures associated with its treatment are increasing disproportionately with resources available. Hence, reducing the drug wastage and financial burden placed on patients, family and society in general is becoming imperative. Our aim was to calculate therapeutic and economic benefits derived by the use of a centralized unit, which allows residual amounts of unused drugs to be reused by patients whose treatments are elaborated in the same working day. We calculated in a comprehensive manner the number of spared vials (flasks) for seven drugs generated from residual amounts of the same working day and, its consequent therapeutic and/or economic benefits. We did not take into account prescribed drug dosages that fitted exactly with doses contained in a vial. Over a six month period, there were: a total of 1524. 07 saved vials with an approximate consequent therapeutic benefit of 123.57 patients and, considering the price of the centralized unit, a total economic benefit of approximately 134, 348 (€),...

Over the last decade the incidence of candidiasis has dramatically increased. To fight candidal infections vaccines with immune modulating properties have been actively investigating in recent years. In our previous studies it was found that the immunobiological drug under the conditional name “Candidocyde” based on the antigens of C. albicans and C. tropicalis fungi possessed the protective and therapeutic effect. The aim of this work is to substantiate experimentally the preservative in the composition of the immunobiological drug based on the antigens of C. albicans and C. tropicalis fungi. Various preservatives (phenol, merthiolate and formaldehyde) in the composition of the immunobiological drug have been studied. Compatibility of the preservative and the immunobiological drug was determined by the antibody titers for preventing and treating candidal infections in mice. The results of the ELISA study when preventing candidal infection have shown that after double injection of the immunobiological drug with phenol in the concentration of 0.25 % and merthiolate in the concentration of 0.01 % as preservatives there is 8 times...

The interaction of losartan potassium (LP) with bovine serum albumin (BSA) was studied by fluorescence quenching in combination with UV–Vis spectroscopic method under near physiological conditions. The fluorescence quenching rate constants and binding constants for BSA–LP system were determined at different temperatures. The fluorescence quenching of BSA by LP is due to static quenching and energy transfer. The results of thermodynamic parameters, ∆H (‒134.3 kJ mol‒1), ∆S (‒368 J mol‒1 K‒1) and ∆G (‒24.52 to ‒20.83 kJ mol‒1), indicated that van der Waals interaction and hydrogen bonding played a major role for LP–BSA association. The competitive experiments demonstrated that the primary binding site of LP on BSA was located at site II in sub-domain IIIA of BSA. The distance between LP and a tryptophane unit was estimated to be 3.183 nm based on the Förster resonance energy transfer theory. The binding constant (Ka) of BSA–LP at 298K was 1.932×104 L mol‒1. Synchronous fluorescence and three-dimensional fluorescence studies showed that the presence of LP could change the conformation of BSA...

The aim of the study to determine antioxidant and cytotoxic properties of the bark extracts of Syzygium cymosum along with phytochemical study for the presence of phytochemical constituents. Total phenolic and flavonoid content of the S.Cymosum extracts was determined by using the Folin- Ciocalteu reagent and aluminum chloride (AlCl3) method, respectively. The crude methanolic extract of S.Cymosum was studied to evaluate its antioxidant activity by DPPH radical scavenging assay and reducing power assay. Brine Shrimp Lethality Bioassay was done for cytotoxic activity. Bark extracts of S.Cymosum have been shown to possess phytoconstituents including carbohydrates, alkaloid, glycosides, steroids, tannins and saponin. The extract was found to contain significant amount of phenol and flavonoid in Folin-Ciocalteau and total flavonoid content assay. Total antioxidant capacity of the extract was estimated to be 505.5±3.535 mg/g of ascorbic acid equivalent. Its IC50 value in DPPH method was 64.99079µg/ml. The extract showed concomitant increase in reducing power with the increase of concentration of the extract. In case of brine shrimp cytotoxicity assay, LC50 value was...
