Objectives: The study was aimed to evaluate and analyse the drug promotional literature distributed by pharmaceutical companies to physicians. This was done using World Health Organization (WHO) criteria for ethical medicinal drug promotion and International Federation of Pharmaceutical Manufacturers & Associations (IFPMA) Code of Practice, 2012. Detailed analysis of claims was done. Material and Method: An observational cross-sectional study was carried out in OPD of a tertiary care hospital. A total of 194 brochures were collected and evaluated according to the WHO criteria and IFPMA Code of practice, 2012. Further claims were categorised and detailed analysis of exaggerated and false claims was done and the authenticity of the brochures was checked. Results: None of the brochures gave complete information in accordance to the WHO and IFPMA Code of practice, 2012. Majority of the claims were about efficacy (77.31%) and safety (13.91%). Seven of them were exaggerated and false. Conclusion: The study concluded that the drug information provided in the promotional brochures can be incomplete and unreliable with the questionable...

Natural antioxidants play an important role in the prevention of many age-related diseases and promotion of health. Among natural antioxidants from plants, flavonoids and other phenolic compounds are potent antioxidants and chelating agents. Betel (Piper betle) is the leaf of a vine belonging to the family Piperaceae, which also includes pepper and kava. It is valued both as mild stimulant and appetiser. Betel leaf is mostly consumed in Asia, and elsewhere in the world by some Asian emigrants, with or without tobacco, the later is an addictive psychostimulating and euphoria-inducing formulation with adverse health effects. Betel leaf is said to have antioxidant properties. No reports are available on the antioxidant potential of the leaf extracts of common betel verities chewed in Odisha. Keeping this in view, the antioxidant activities of leaf extracts of five selected betel varieties (Vishnupuri, Desawari, Ghajipur, Desipaan and Jaleswar) were carried out. Results revealed that the leaves have sound ROS scavenging activity. Present papers highlights the antioxidant and medicinal importances of common betel varieties, the traditional edible...

The present study was designed to evaluate the effect of Helix aspersa crude extract on colonic injury resulting from hyperhomocysteinemia induced by feeding rats high methionine diet. Wistar albino rats (200-250g) were divided into four groups. Hyperhomocysteinemia (Hhcy) was induced by methionine treatment (1g/kg/day) for 15 days. M group received only Methionine, MH and MP received Methionine and Helix aspersa Crude Extract (8g/kg/day) or Prednisolone (4 mg/kg/day) respectively at the 8th day until the end of experimentation. Prednisolone was used as a standard drug. At the end plasma homocysteine and C-reactive protein were evaluated, followed by colon histopathological investigations. Methionine treatment induced significant increase (P <0.001) in homocysteine and CRP levels in plasma as compared to control rats. Helix aspersa crude extract induces significant decreased of homocysteine (P <0.001) and CRP (P <0.01) levels as compared with experimental control group. The results were comparable to those obtained with prednisolone, a standard anti-inflammatory drug. Histological assessment showed colonic tissue damages in methionine treated group compared to control (P <0.001) as...

Scavenger receptor class B member 1 also known as SR-B1 is a receptor that in human is encoded by the SCARB1 gene. SR-B1 functions as a receptor for high density lipoprotein. SR-B1 receptor is mostly found in liver and is best known for its role in facilitating the uptake of cholesteryl ester from HDL in liver. This movement of cholesterol is known as reverse cholesterol transport. Cancerous cells generally have high requirement for cholesterol as they are rapidly dividing cells. HDL acts as carrier for cholesteryl esters and triglycerides. The high affinity of cancer cells for HDL has made HDL useful as carrier for delivering anti-cancer drugs into cancerous cells. So synthetic rHDL particles are designed as carrier for anti-cancer drug owning to their structural features, biocompatibility and targeting capability via receptor mediated mechanism due to which cytotoxic effect of cancer chemotherapeutic drugs on healthy organs can be significantly diminished by employing rHDL as carrier. Drugs incorporated into rHDL were 2.5-23 times cytotoxic to cancer cell than the free...

In recent years, the significance of polyunsaturated fatty acids analysis has gained much attention because of their various biological activities in health and disease, especially the n-3 and n-6 fatty acids. The current proportional cram endeavors on providing qualitatively the fatty acid composition of methanol extracted seed oils of five Artocarpus species specifically Artocarpus heterophyllus, Artocarpus integrifolia, Artocarpus inscicus, Artocarpus hirsitus and Artocarpus integer. All the extracted oils were thick yellowish in colour having pungent odour with a yield of 40%. Fallouts evidently indicate that the intricate fatty acid profile was experiential for A. heterophyllus through fifteen peaks, next to that A.hirsitus by nine peaks, A.integrifolia by seven peaks and, A.inscicus seed oil had merely five peaks lastly A. integer with four peaks. Essential fatty acid 9-Octadecadienoic acid (C18H34O2) and 9, 12 – Octadecadienoic acid, methyl ester (C19H34O2) were found in all tested methanol seed oil free fatty acid methyl ester fractions except A. inscicus in that order. These findings demonstrated that essential oils of five Artocarpus species seeds...
