World Health Organization (WHO, Geneva) has appreciated the importance of medicinal plants for public health care for use in developing nations. Putranjiva roxburghii Wall. is having important role in the traditional Ayurvedic and Unani systems of holistic health and herbal medicine of the East. The leaves of Putranjiva roxburghii Wall. are reported to have good medicinal values in traditional system of medicine. The present study highlights the pharmacognostical studies including parameters such as powder analysis by microscopical evaluation, color reaction, and study of physicochemical parametersof the Putranjiva roxburghii Wall. leaves. These observations will help in the pharmacognostical identification and standardization of the drug in the crude form and can be used to distinguish the drug from its...

Traditional systems of medicine in India include Ayurveda,Yoga, Naturopathy, Unani and Siddha. Among them Ayurveda, Siddha and Unani systems (ASU) use plants, minerals and animal products as main drugs to cure various ailments. There has been a boom in the usage of ASU drugs and export is appreciably high in the last two decades. ASU drugs may vary in composition and properties, unlike conventional pharmaceutical products, which are usually prepared from synthetic, chemically pure materials by means of reproducible manufacturing techniques and procedures. Counterfeits and drugs of poor quality degrade the clinical effects of ASU drugs. Thus authentication is a critical step for successful and reliable clinical applications and for further experimental studies on ASU drugs. The authentication methods for herbal, mineral and marine products are discussed in detail which broadly include microscopy, spectroscopy, chromatography, chemometry, immunoassays, DNA fingerprinting etc. A simple method like organoleptic characteristics may hold good to authenticate certain drugs but some may require highly sophisticated techniques too, based on the adulterants and similarity in the...

Objectives: The present study was carried out to evaluate the anti-inflammatory effect of extracts of leaves of Vitex trifolia Linn. (Verbaneaceae). Methods: The anti inflammatory activity of plant extracts at different dose intervals was evaluated by using two models Carrageenan induced rat paw edema and Xylene induced ear edema in Mice. Acute inflammation in rats was induced by injecting Carrageenan (0.1 ml of 1% suspension in 0.9% saline) in subplantar region and topical application of xylene (0.03ml)to the anterior and posterior surface of mice ear. The mean paw volume and percent reduction in ear edema were evaluated. Results: Significant reduction in Paw volume (P<0.01) and ear edema were observed in all treated groups. Alcoholic extract showed more activity than aqueous extract and also in dose dependent manner. Conclusion: The study showed that the leaves of Vitex trifolia Linn. (Verbaneaceae) possess an anti-inflammatory...

Aegle marmelos Corr. (Rutaceae), commonly known as Bael, Bengal Quince is a tree of Indian origin, well known from pre- historic time. Utilization of bael fruit in day-to-day life has a great nutritional, environmental as well as commercial importance. All the parts of this tree including stem, bark, root, leaves, fruit and seeds at all stages of maturity has medicinal virtues and has been used in Ethno-medicine to exploits its medicinal properties including antidiarroheal, antidysentric, antipyretic and anti inflammatory activities. Compounds purified from bael fruit have been proven to have biological potential against several diseases like diabetes, gastric ulcer and hyperlipidaemia. It should also be indicated that the therapeutic activities of few isolated constituents have also proven to possess antibacterial, antiviral, antioxidant and radioprotective activities. Thus the purpose of this abstract is to explore the pharmacological potential of some crude extracts of bael...
