In the present study, three algal species (Spirulina platensis, Chlorella pyrenoidosa and Nostoc muscorum (ATCC 2789) were used to investigate their antimicrobial and antioxidant properties against some human pathogenic bacteria and fungi (Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtilis, Bacillus cereus, Micrococcus luteus and fungus Aspergillus luchuensis, Aspergillus niger, Fusarium oxysporum). Four different solvents namely methanol, acetone, n-hexane and water were used for extraction. The present investigation showed that methanolic extract was more effective against the pathogenic bacteria and fungi. Methanolic extract of C. pyrenoidosa and N. muscorum was found to be most effective against P. aeruginosa while methanolic extract of S. platensis showed maximum activity against S. aureus. S. platensis showed maximum antifungal activity in comparison to other algal extracts. Antioxidant activity was determined by free radical scavenging activity (Nitric oxide radical scavenging activity) and it was found that methanolic extract of S. platensis showed maximum antioxidant...

Food and nutrients play vital role in normal functioning of the body. The samples selected for this study were Ethanolic extract of Red grape seed, Ethanolic extract of green tea leaves, Commercially available grape seed extract / Isotretinion tablet, green tea extract , Vitamin A and E tablets. The Nutraceutical effects of grape seed extract and green tea extract was analyzed. The antimicrobial activity of all the above samples were studied by disc diffusion method against Pseudomoas spp., Flavobacterium spp, Aeromonas spp., Enterobacteriaceae, E. coli, lactobacillus spp., and staphylococcus spp. The antibiotic tetracycline disc used as a standard. All samples had been found to contain potent antimicrobial activity. The antioxidant activity was measured by DPPH method and compared with vitamin A and vitamin C. Both the prepared and commercially available extracts obtained more antioxidant activity than vitamin A & C. Thus the results showed that the grape seed extract and green tea leaves has antioxidant and antimicrobial...

The Diethyl ether fraction of the Methanolic extract of Annona senegalensis (Pers) stem bark was prepared in yield of (0.16%). Preparative Thin Layer Chromatography analysis of the fraction resulted in the identification of two spots with antimicrobial activity. Subsequent GC/MS analysis of these spots resulted in the identification of ten components (spot one) and fourteen components (spot two). The fraction showed significant antimicrobial activity against clinical isolates of E. coli, S. enteriditis and S....

Some new series of 3-(4-substituted-phenyl)- 2-thioxo-2,3-dihydroquinazolin-4(1H)-one, 3-(4-substituted-phenyl)-2-(methylthio)quinazolin-4(3H)-one and 3-(4-substituted-phenyl)-2-hydrazinylquinazolin-4(3H)-one were synthesized by cyclization of 4-substituted-phenylcarbamodithioate with methyl anthranilate followed by reaction with dimethylsulphate and then prepared compound was refluxed with hydrazinehydrate respectively. The starting material 4-substituted-phenylcarbamodithioate was synthesized from 4-substituted-aniline. The title compounds were investigated for antibacterial and antifungal activity by disc diffusion technique. Compound IIa, IIb and IIIa showed moderate activity against B. subtilis, E. coli and A. niger as compared to standard drug. Compound IIIb and Iva exhibited good activity against A. niger. Compound IIIc and IVc was found to be most active compound against E. coli and moderately active against B. subtilis and A. niger, of the prepared...

A simple HPTLC method was used to determine the saponin profile of Barleria cristata L. crude leaf extract. The antimicrobial activity of saponin fraction from the leaves of Barleria cristata L. was studied in-vitro against four bacterial species and four fungal species by agar disc diffusion method. Klebsiella Pneumonia, Staphylococcus aureus, E. coli, Aspergillus parasites were the most inhibited microorganism. The present study suggests that the saponin fraction possess significant antimicrobial activity and can be used to develop a potential antimicrobial...
