Bio-surfactants, produced by microorganisms are important biotechnology products, owing to their modes of action, low toxicity, relative ease of preparation, and widespread applicability as an industrial, medicinal and in food industries. The present study was done to isolate the bio-surfactant producing Actinomycetes from three different types of soil samples contaminated with petroleum spillages from Naval Dockyard (NDYS), deep marine sediment from sea-bed (DMS), and with poultry litter (PLS), collected from around Visakhapatnam. Thirty isolates of soil Actinomycetes were initially screened in Humic-acid vitamin-salts agar-plates, to identify their bio-surfactant activity by Oil-displacement method. Only seven of these thirty isolates, namely, PLS-1, PLS-2, PLS-4, PLS-9, NDYS-3, NDYS-4, and DMS-1, showed promising bio-surfactant activity, compared to sodium-laryl-sulfate as standard. These seven isolates were further subjected to preliminary screening methods (modified drop collapse method, Para film-M method, and lipase activity method), to identify bio-surfactant production. Three of these seven isolates, namely, PLS-1 from poultry littered soil, NDYS-4 from petroleum contaminated soil from the naval dockyard, and DMS-1 from deep marine sediment, showed maximum...

Flavonoid and sesquiterpene constituents of the aerial part of Cleome brachycarpa were chemically investigated and screened for their potential cytotoxicity. A flavonol glycoside; 3, 5, 4` trihydroxy-3`-methoxy flavone – 7 – O – a – L -rhamnopyranose (1“`® 2“) – O – β – D-glucopyranoside (1) and a megastigmane glucoside; (+)-(6S, 9R) roseoside (2) were isolated for the first time from the n-butanol fraction of the 90 % ethanol extract of Cleome brachycarpa. Four methylated flavonoids were isolated from the chloroform fraction and identified as 5,4`- dihydroxy-3,6,7,3′ tetramethoxyflavone (3), 5,5`- dihydroxy-3,6,7,3′,4′, pentamethoxy-flavone (4), 5-hydroxyl -3,6,7,3′,4′,5′-hexamethoxyflavone (5) and 5, 7,3′,4′ tetrahydroxyflavone (6) In addition, two sesquiterpene oxides, namely buchairol (7) and teucladiol (8) were isolated from the n-hexane fraction for the first time. Structure elucidation was achieved using spectroscopic techniques, including IR, UV, ESI-MS, EI-MS and 1D, and 2D-NMR. Each of the three fractions and isolated compounds were screened for their cytotoxicity and lethality using the brine shrimp (Artemia salina) assay. The results showed high lethality for all the examined...

Background and Objectives: Glucose 6-Phosphate Dehydrogenase (G-6PD) is a ubiquitous enzyme playing a key role in the metabolism of glucose. Reduced activity of G-6PD is one of the most prevalent and genetically determined hereditary defects of the human being. Recently, it has been suggested that reduced G–6PD activity in pre-eclampsia may act as a contributory factor for the development of this complicated pregnancy. Material and Methods: The material for the present study comprised of 50 pregnant females at or after 20 weeks of pregnancy without complications and 50 pregnant women having blood pressure ³ 140/90 mmHg on at least two occasions ³ 4 h apart after 20 weeks of gestation. G-6PD Activity in RBCs was measured. Results: It was found that reduced Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) enzyme activity may be a contributory factor for the development of preeclampsia in pregnancy. Conclusion: Reduced G6PD activity may be one of the causative factors for the development of preeclampsia, so, routine screening of erythrocyte G6PD activity during the antenatal period must be done....

Introduction: Global warming is one of the major issues in the current scenario. Heat stress is known to affect both physical and mental task. Imbalance in the maintenance of temperature leads to oxidative stress and damage to the body systems. Several studies have been documented on various stressors and its impact on antioxidant status. Aim: The present study was done to evaluate the antioxidant status in rats after acute heat stress. Methodology: Twelve male Swiss albino rats were randomly divided into two groups, control group, and experimental group. The experimental group of rats was exposed to acute heat stress at 38 ºC for four hours for a single day. Blood from the jugular vein was collected for the estimation of antioxidant statuses like LPO and SOD, GPx, CAT, vitamin C, and vitamin E in rats. Results: After exposure to acute heat stress, there was a significant and progressive increase (P<0.05) in LPO levels of the experimental group than compared to controls. Superoxide dismutase (SOD), Glutathione peroxidase (GPx) Catalase, vitamin...

An accurate and precise method was developed for Rosiglitazone Maleate in the visible range of electromagnetic spectrum sing Bromothymol Blue (BTB) in alkaline medium resulting in a blue chromogen showing its absorption maxima at 615 nm. Sandell’s sensitivity to the proposed method was found to be 1.5 × 10-4 µg/ml. The extracted complexes obey Beer–Lambert’s law in the concentration range of 1 to 30 µg/ml. The effect of the concentration of dye and pH have been studied and optimized. All the methods were validated as per ICH guidelines. The methods have been applied to the determination of drug in commercial tablets, and results of the analysis were validated statistically through recovery...
