Diabetes is a debilitating metabolic disorder characterized by chronically elevated blood glucose level above the normal range and affects mostly all kind of populations epidemiologically. Objectives: In clinical situations, diabetic patients already on prescription of Rosiglitazone are prone to bacterial infection. To cure such infection Clarithromycin is prescribed particularly in Respiratory Tract Infections. Materials and Methods: Diabetes was induced experimentally in overnight fasted Rats by intraperitoneal injection of Nicotinamide, 15 min prior to intraperitoneal injection of Streptozotocin (60 mg/kg). Nicotinamide (160 mg/kg) was freshly prepared by dissolving in distilled water and Streptozotocin was dissolved in freshly prepared 0.1M Citrate buffer. Since Rosiglitazone and Clarithromycin have found to exert minimal to mild toxicity in animals on these doses, i.e. 80 mg/kg and 400 mg/kg respectively, both these drugs were administered for 14 days to the animals to study the toxicity in diabetic condition. Parameters included for the study includes body weight changes, oral glucose tolerance test, biochemistry, hematology, urine analysis and histopathology. Results: Clarithromycin aggravated hyperglycemia and reduced platelet count...

Hypertensive disorders are important causes of premature delivery, IUGR and intra uterine fetal death. It accounts for 15% to 20% of maternal deaths in developing as well as developed nations. An association of serum uric acid with hypertensive disorders of pregnancy. The main objective of the present study was measuring and evaluating serum uric acid values in normal pregnant and preeclamptic and eclamptic cases to see the trend in the rise of serum uric acid in toxemic cases. Therefore we planned this study. The present study was conducted on Control(15 Normal non pregnant healthy women) and 140 cases they were further sub divided as, 60 Normal pregnant women in differenttrimesters, 60-Preeclampticcases, 20-Eclampticcases. Then Preeclampsia was divided into3groups (Mild preeclampsia – BP at least 140/90 mmHg. Moderate preeclampsia – BP more than 140/90 but <160/110mmHg. Severe preeclampsia – BP>160/110 mmHg but without convulsions). Estimation of serum uric acid was done at Department of Biochemistry, Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences, Ranchi, Jharkhand during June 2008 to Sept.2009. The cases were selected...

6-[(5-pyridine-yl-1, 2, 3, 4-oxadiazole-2-yl)dithiol]-9H-purine (38) and 9H-purine-6yl-benzyldithiocarbamate (45) are synthesized as possible prodrugs for 6-mercaptopurine(6-MP). The generation of the compounds 38, 42, 45 and 48 were accomplished following multistep reaction procedures. The reaction and purity of the products were checked by TLC, the structure of the final compounds and their intermediates were confirmed by their melting points, infra red spectroscopy and whether differences elemental microanalysis. To determine exist among in sensitivity different tissue types toward treatment with 38 and 45. The cytotoxicity of the two compounds and their intermediates were confirmed by their melting points, infra red spectroscopy and elemental microanalysis. The cytotoxicity of two derivatives (38 and 45) was assessed in National Cancer Institute’s anticancer screening program, and the results were compared with the cytotoxicity of 6-MP obtained in the same screen. The results show that the compound 38 and 45 were more cytotoxic than 6-MP. Additionally the prodrugs are less effective against leukemia cell line than 6-MP. Both derivatives exhibited high growth-inhibitory activities in renal cell line....

Ceiba pentandra (C. pentandra) has been traditionally used in the ayurveda system of medicine for the treatment of obesity and atherosclerosis. The present study was undertaken to evaluate anti-obesity and hypolipidaemic activity of the ethanolic leaf extract of C. pentandra in Cafeteria diet (CD) treatedWistar albino rats. Obesity was induced in Wistar albino rats by feeding CD daily for twelve weeks. Body weight was measured initially and then every week thereafter. Food and water intake was measured daily. On day 85th, the serum biochemical parameters were estimated and the animals were sacrificed with over dose of anesthetic ether. The liver and fat pads (perirenal, mesenteric and epididymis) were removed and weighed immediately. The intestinal activity of enzyme alkaline phosphatase (ALP) was determined. Administration of C. pentandra (125 mg/kg) prevented the increase in body weight in cafeteria diet treated animals. Administration of C. pentandra showed significant decrease in body weight gain in CD treated obese rats. The significant decrease in ALP level was observed in C. pentandra treated rats. Administration...

Herbal drugs play an important role in health care dynamics especially in developing countries. The key step in isolation of biologically active compounds is extraction, which is expressed as total extractive yield, yields of metabolites of interest or intensity of biological activity. Extraction of phytoconstituents from plant materials has been of tremendous interest and potential. Extractive value of the crude drug also indicates the quality as well as purity of the drug. For most extractions, relatively simple techniques, such as percolation and maceration are effective and economical. Some specific applications however, require more sophisticated and costly extraction techniques using specialized equipments. It is often possible to select the specific solvent to maximize the yields on the basis of different techniques, varying in cost and level of complexity. Therefore the objective of the present study was to compare different extraction techniques with various solvents for determination of extractive values. The plants selected for the present research work were Averrrhoa carambola L. fruits (Oxalidaceae), Lagenaria vulgaris Ser. fruits (Cucurbitaceae) and Curculigo...
