Costus speciosus belongs to the family Zingiberaceae and contains lots of medicinal properties. The aim of this study was to screen, characterise and quantify the selected biomolecules viz. phenolics, proteins in C. speciosus. Ethanol extract possessed high amount of phenolics than the acetone and aqueous extract. Aqueous extract has least amount of phenolics compared to ethanol and acetone extracts. The protein contents were high in phosphate buffer as compared to the aqueous extract. Qualitative estimation of phenolic compounds was accomplished by reverse phase high pressure liquid chromatography. High amount of phenolic content was found in the mature leaf of C....

Three different solvent extracts of seeds of Annona squamosa L. were studied for its antibacterial activity. Agar cup method was selected to test antibacterial activity using two Gram-positive (Bacillus subtilis, Staphylococcus aureus) and three Gram-negative (Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Klebsiella pneumoniae) bacteria. The screeningresults showed that highest inhibition was observed by the methanol extract followed bypetroleum ether and chloroform extracts for Annona squamosa seed. Klebsiella pneumoniae, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Bacillus subtilis and Staphylococcus aureus are the most sensitive bacterial strains among all test...

Casuarina equisetifolia (Casuarinaceae) is considered a medicinal plant and is traditionally used for the treatment of diarrhoea. Preliminary phytochemical screening of methanolic extract of the aerial bark revealed the presence of carbohydrates, alkaloids, proteins, glycosides, saponins, flavonoids and tannins. The extract reduced contractions in isolated ileum induced by spasmogens like ACh, Histamine, KCl and BaCl2 and potentiated the effect of Nifedipine suggesting an antimuscarinic, antihistaminic and a calcium channel blocking action. Flavonoids and tannins present in the extract might be responsible for the observed antispasmodic effect and suggests multiple mechanisms, which can be exploited in future...

The present study was designed to evaluate the heavy metal absorbing potential of bacteria isolated from industry effluent sites of river Nagavali, Srikakulam Andhra Pradesh. From the effluent waste water three bacteria were isolated and confirmed as Staphylococcus aureus and Staphylococcus epidermidis and Staphylococcus saprophyticus after performing various biochemical tests. The heavy metal tolerant efficiency was determined by analyzing the growth of the bacteria in presence of heavy metal (Cu, Hg, Co and Zn) solution and their optimum tolerance was determined by measuring the optical density at 600nm after 24hr and 48hr of incubation. Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis and Staphylococcus saprophyticus were found to grow in heavy metal...

The present investigation was carried out to study the antidiabetic effect of the methanolic extract of bark of Bauhinia purpurea in Streptozotocin induced diabetic model. The antidiabetic activitywas evaluated in normal & Streptozotocin induced diabetic rats. Decreased blood glucose level of the test animals showed that the extract exhibited significant antidiabetic activity when compared to diabetic control group. The results also indicated dose dependent effect. The antidiabetic activity produced by the extract might be due to the increased uptake of glucose at the tissue level or due to an increase in pancreatic beta cell function or due to inhibition of intestinal absorption of...
