Antibacterial activity of methanolic extract of Terminalia arjuna stem bark samples (Apical bark, middle bark and Mature inner bark) was studied with respect to different pathogenic bacteria species Bacillus subtilis, Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Klebsiella pneumoneae, Salmonella typhii, Proteus mirabilis and Micrococcus sp. The methanolic extract of apical bark was effective than the middle bark and mature bark in inhibiting the growth of all bacteria. The bacterium Staphylococcus aureus was most sensitive among all the bacterial species studied. Preliminary phytochemical analysis revealed the presence of alkaloids, glycosides, flavonoids, flavanols, phenols, saponins and terpenoids. The traditional system of the medicine remains the major source of the health care. It is safe alternative, lesser cost and better tolerance and its complications. The major defense against free radical compounds found in medicinal plants is in the form of natural antioxidants. The present investigation is an attempt to assess the bioactivity of daily oral administration of methanolic extract of Tinospora cordifolia stem (T.C.S.) (500mg/kg body weight) for 6weeks in normal and alloxan induced diabetic rats. A significant decrease in blood glucose, glycosylated hemoglobin, cholesterol (p<0.05), and increase in body weight and protein (p<0.01) were observed in diabetic rats on treatment with T.C.S. methanolic extract when compared to normal. The activity of the hepatic enzyme hexokinase was significantly increased where as glucose 6-phosphatase and fructose 1, 6- bisphosphatase were significantly decreased (p<0.01) by the oral administration of T.C.S. methanolic extract in diabetic rats when compared to normal. The study was undertaken to investigate the hypolipidemic and hepatoprotective effects of the different fractions (Petroleum ether, ethyl acetate and chloroform) of methanolic extract of Momordica charantia. The different fractions of extract were administered intraperitoneally as a single dose of 150 mg/kg body weight to alloxan induced diabetic rats and found to reduce blood lipid level (Total cholesterol and Triglycerides) significantly (p<0.05). The plant fractions also exhibited correction of altered biochemical parameters viz., SGOT and SGPT levels in diabetic rats. The effect of plant fractions were compared with standard drug metformin. The phytochemical screening tests indicated that the different constituents such as saponins, tannins, triterpenes, alkaloids and flavonoids etc. were present in the plant which has hypolipidemic and hepatoprotective properties. Although there are many studies on antimicrobial activities of different plants, there is no report on antibacterial activity of Pterospermum acerifolium (Sterculiaceae). Therefore, a microbiological study was conducted to detect antibacterial activity of P. acerifolium. Successive ethanolic extract of bark of P. acerifolium were fractionated with hexane, butanol, methanol and water. In vitro antibacterial activity was tested by using agar cup and minimum inhibitory concentration method against S. aureus, B. lichenoformis, B. subtilis, E. coli, P. florescence, P. aeruginosa, and S. typhimurium. Although all five extracts showed promising antibacterial activity against test bacterial species, yet maximum activity was observed in butanol extract. S. aureus was the most sensitive strain. MIC values for most of the extracts ranged from 0.312 to 5.0 mg/ml; while the least MBC value was observed at 2.5 mg/ml. Phytochemical analysis exhibited the presence of alkaloids, tannin and phenolic compounds, flavonoids, glycosides, saponins, steroid & sterols and triterpenoids in different extracts. A simple, precise, specific and accurate reverse phase HPLC method has been developed for the determination of Ritonavir in bulk and pharmaceutical dosage forms. The chromatographic separation was achieved on Symmetry C18 (4.6 x 100mm, 3.5 μm) column using a mixture of Buffer: Acetonitrile (50:50) as the mobile phase at a flow rate 1.0 ml/min.
