The root of Heliotropium indicum is reported to have good medicinal values in traditional system of medicines. Commonly called as Indian Turnsole, is a herb with slightly woody at base. It is distributed in the tropical and temperate regions of the world and found throughout India The present study deals with phytochemical investigations of Heliotropium indicum root including determination of loss on drying(3.8%), Ash values{total ash(6.3%), acid insoluble ash(3.5%), water soluble ash(3.2), sulphated ash(6%)} and extractive values{water soluble extractive(21%), alcohol soluble extractive(2%), benzene soluble extractive(1.5%), Petroleum Ether soluble Extractive(2.1%)}. The preliminary phytochemical screening of powdered drug was also carried out. The qualitative chemical examinations revealed the presence of various phytoconstituents like alkaloids, carbohydrates, phytosterols, tannins and saponin in the root extracts through the chromatographic separation technique i.e. TLC . These observations therefore support the use of Heliotropium indicum in herbal cure remedies. An Ulcer is a sore which means an open painful wound in mucous membranes or mucosal linings of the body. Gastro intestinal ulcers frequently occur in the stomach and duodenum where acid and pepsin activity is greatest. Peptic ulcer disease can be prevented by strengthening the cytoprotection, the defensive mechanism of gastric mucosa, rather than attenuating factor of aggression causing ulceration. Michelia champaca Linn., a well known member of Magnoliaceae is known for its fragrant flowers and various pharmacological actions. Anti-ulcerogenic activity of Michelia champaca Linn. flower and leaves are evaluated against aspirin induced gastric ulcers in pylorus ligated rats. The anti-ulcer potential is determined by using gastric juice volume, total acidity, pH and ulcer index. Both aqueous and alcoholic extracts of Michelia champaca Linn. flower and leaves are evaluated for their anti ulcer potential at about a dose of 300mg/kg b.wt, and are compared with the standard drug Cimetidine (50mg/kg b.wt). The Methanolic extract of leaves (LE) and Methanolic extract of flowers (FE) of Nerium indicum (Arali) was analysed for Antioxidant activity (AOA) in terms of DPPH free radicals, Total Phenolic Content (TPC) was measured in terms of Gallic acid equivalent and Flavonoid content was analysed in terms of Quercetin equivalent. The antioxidant activities of (LE & FE) were found to be 72.8% and 67 %. TPC of study extracts (LE & FE) were found to be 227 mg/100g and 449 mg/100g. The Total Flavonoid content of (LE & FE) were found to be 125 mg/100g and 199 mg/100g respectively. Superoxide anion radical scavenging activity of flowers was 66 % compared to leaves 25 %. Similarly Lipid Peroxidation showed higher activity in flowers than leaves. Enzymatic antioxidant activity such as Superoxide Dismutase, Glutathione peroxidase and Catalase of Nerium indicum flowers were around 10% to 30% higher than that of leaves.
