A novel method of estimation and validation of Atorvastatin by Reverse Phase-High Performance Liquid Chromatography coupled with Ultra-violet detection was developed which had high potential in determining drug concentration in rat plasma samples during preclinical studies. Atorvastatin being >99% protein bound, exhibits great challenge in getting extracted from plasma samples. Hence, by treating them with strong protein precipitating agents, that is, initially with 10% w/v perchloric acid and further treating its supernatant with mixture of 2M potassium carbonate and 3M of potassium hydroxide, drug extraction was facilitated. Diclofanac sodium was the selected internal standard. Process of elution was conducted using Phenomenex C18 column and mobile phase comprising of a mixture of methanol: water in 70:30 ratio adjusted to pH 5.5. This precise method was linear between a range of 10 to 1000 ng/ml with limit of detection and quantification as 10ng/ml and 15ng/ml respectively. 2-factor 3-level face centred Central Composite Design was employed using Design Expert Software ver. 8.0.0 to examine effect of independent chromatographic factors like pH of...

Delivery of the desired drug as bioadhesive drug delivery systems has been subject of interest since 1980s. The various advantages associated with these systems made the buccal drug delivery as a novel route of drug administration. Buccal region offers an attractive route for the administration of systemic drug delivery. The objective of the study was to develop bucoadhesive buccal tablets of Chlorpheniramine Maleate and Phenylephrine Hydrochloride in combined dosage form. Buccal tablets were prepared by Wet granulation method using the Carbopol 934P, Hydroxy propyl methyl cellulose (HPMC), and sodium CMC as bioadhesive polymer. The tablets were evaluated for the precompression parameters and post compression parameter like bioadhesive strength, In vitro retention time, and In vitro drug release study and microbial analysis. The thickness and weight of the tablets, respectively, ranges from 3.82 ± 0.01 and 3.92 ± 0.02 and the weight of tablets ranges from 201-202mg.The Formulation containing sodium CMC and HPMC shows acceptable bioadhesive strength but erode respectively, with in 6 to 8 hours. The tablet formulation containing...

The confined reports on Rhododendron arboreum Sm spp. nilagiricum (Zenker) Tagg stimulated to examine the bioactive compounds and the antimicrobial activity of its flower and bark extracts against medically critical human pathogenic microbes, apart from the availability of several reports on its main species R. arboreum. The microbial strains used for the study were four bacterial (Streptococcus pyogene, Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae) and two fungal (Candida albicans and Trichoderma viride) strains. Agar well diffusion method is applied to assess the antimicrobial activity of the aqueous and methanol extracts of the plant sample. Various fractions of aqueous, ethanol, methanol and chloroform extracts confirmed the presence of alkaloids, phenols, flavanoids, tannins, saponins, terpenoids, steroids, carbohydrates, glycosides, amino acids and proteins. The methanol extract of flower revealed a promising antibacterial and antifungal activity against S. aureus and K. pneumoniae respectively. This study shows a broad and great therapeutic potential of the plant extract. However further studies are necessary for this potent plant extracts to evaluate the other parameters of antimicrobial...

Self-medication is the selection and use of medicines by individuals to treat self-recognized illnesses or symptoms. Studies performed on self-medication reveal that it is a fairly common practice, especially in economically deprived communities. This Descriptive cross sectional study assessed the self‑medication issue among medical students of Aleppo Government University (AGU) and Al-Andalus Private University (APU) using Pre-tested and validated questionnaires. Among 436 students participated from two universities, the prevalence of self-medication was (60.5%, 40.9%) respectively. The highly significant difference (p< 0.001) was observed between self-medication rates between two universities. Whereas, the medication pattern for self-medication was similar among self-medicated students at two universities. Analgesics followed by antipyretics were the most drugs used for self-medication. Headache followed by fever and flu were the most frequent symptoms. The two main reasons for self-medication were mildness of illness and time-saving. Selection of medicine for self-medication was depends mainly on the recommendations of community pharmacists and they were the main source for obtaining self-medication drugs. This study showed that a significant number of...

Adverse drug reactions in the form of toxic epidermal necrolysis is a rare but potentially fatal disorder. The pathophysiology of such reactions are not properly understood. There are many drugs which are very often implicated for causing such severe reactions. Allopurinol is a common drug used in chronic gout but also notorious for causing Steven – Johnson syndrome and rarely toxic epidermal necrolysis. Very often such reactions may cause severe morbidity and even mortality. Here, we describe a case of fatal toxic epidermal necrolysis caused probably due to allopurinol use in a 62 year old male. The event required immeditae reporting as it lead to the death of the patient. Immediate treatment is essential for combating such reactions and caution should be practised while prescribing such drugs. Moreover intense reporting of such cases will help us in understanding the pattern of such reactions and take necessary and timely...
