Bronchopneumonia is a major cause of morbidity and mortality among children under 5 years of age. Recurrent respiratory infections, significantly affect a child’s quality of life. Although bronchopneumonia has no direct equivalent in Ayurveda, its clinical manifestations like Kasa (cough), Peenasa (rhinitis), Nishteevana (expectoration), Ghurghurakam (wheezing), and Shwasakrichrata (difficulty in breathing) resemble the features described in Tamaka Shwasa. This case report describes the Ayurveda management of recurrent respiratory illness and Bronchopneumonia in pediatric patient. A 1.5-year-old male child presented with recurrent episodes of cough with expectoration, fever, cold, breathing difficulty, and reduced appetite. The child had experienced recurrent respiratory infections since infancy and had been hospitalized for6times for similar complaints. He was previously diagnosed with Influenza B-associated Bronchopneumonia with wheeze based on clinical examination, laboratory investigations, and radiological findings. Management included Ayurveda treatments which aided in improving airway patency. The patient was managed with Ayurveda therapies, including Uro Abhyanga (Localized massage) with Karpooradi Taila followed by Nadi Sweda (fomentation), along with internal medications comprising Pushkaramulasava, Bhringarajasava, Indukantha Kashaya, and...

Pharmacognostic evaluation becomes a simple and reliable method for the authentication of crude herbal drugs, once the morphological characters are lost during processing. This study presents a comprehensive pharmacognostic, physicochemical, and elemental characterization of the root bark of two ethnomedicinally important but underexplored trees- Pajanelia longifolia and Radermachera xylocarpa of Bignoniaceae family. The roots of both species share some common histological characters like stone cells and calcium oxalate crystals, but differ in odour, cork thickness, and crystal size. Minor differences in ash values indicate variation in inorganic content. For the first time, this study reports the mineral and heavy metal elemental profiles of the root bark of P. longifolia and R. xylocarpa. Calcium was identified as the predominant mineral in P. longifolia (268.54 mg Kg⁻¹) and R. xylocarpa (328.43 mg Kg⁻¹), followed by magnesium, highlighting their potential nutritional and therapeutic significance. Major toxic heavy metals such as Al, Ni, Pb, Hg and Co were found to be below detectable levels in both species, while copper was detected only in...

Background: Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is largely caused by the irrational and inappropriate use of antibiotics. To encourage sensible antibiotic prescription and enhance antimicrobial stewardship, the WHO established the AWaRe (Access, Watch, Reserve) categorization and also\ to uncover irrational prescribing practices. Objectives: To assess antibiotic prescribing patterns and compliance with WHO AWaRe standards in several tertiary care hospital departments. Material & Methods: A cross-sectional observational study was conducted with in-patients admitted to the medical, dermatological, and psychiatric departments of the ‘Assam Medical College and Hospital in Dibrugarh’. Using purposive sampling, 230 prescriptions that contained at least one antibiotic. Case record form was used to document demographic information, diagnosis, recommended antibiotics, mode of administration, length of therapy, and generic prescriptions. Antibiotics were categorized using the WHO AWaRe classification, and Microsoft Excel’s descriptive statistics were used to examine prescription indicators. Results: Antibiotics were given more frequently from the Watch group (56%) compared to the Access group (36%). Ceftriaxone (36.54%) as most commonly prescribed and other broad-spectrum antibiotics accounted for the majority of...

Background: Multivisceral surgical resections (MVR) are highly specialised procedures involving the surgical resection of multiple organs or tissue groups within the thorax, abdominal and pelvic cavities. Here we describe a series of patients who underwent complex major mutivisceral resections unique in their type in the world literature. Materials and Methods: Case 1: Patient underwent Subtotal Sternectomy with en-bloc 3rd-6th partial rib resection with sternal reconstruction by Sandwich technique (2 layers of Prolene mesh with PMMA cement interposition) & Pectoralis Myocutaneous flap. Postoperative histopathology was suggestive of Epithelioid Malignant Peripheral Nerve Sheath tumor arising in a Schwannoma. Case 2: Patient underwent enbloc radical resection of the retroperitoneal tumor with right nephrectomy, subtotal cholecystectomy, partial right hemidiaphragm resection with vascular dissection following 5 cycles neoadjuvant chemotherapy. Postoperative histopathology showed features suggestive of Extra skeletal Ewing’s sarcoma, Grade III. Case 3: Patient underwent left radical nephrectomy with left colectomy with para –aortic lymph node dissection with pancreatic and extensive retroperitoneal dissection with colocolic anastomosis and omentectomy. Postoperative histopathology was suggestive of Fumarate...

Cancer presents an escalating public health crisis and a significant barrier to life expectancy in Zimbabwe. Conventional oncological treatments face severe constraints in domestic healthcare facilities due to limited funding, diagnostic equipment deficits, and unreliable medicine supply chains. This study evaluates the phytochemical profile, in-vivo acute oral safety, and in-vitro anti-inflammatory and antioxidant bioactivities of crude bark extracts from Cassia abbreviata Oliv. Cassia abbreviata bark was sustainably harvested from Murehwa, Mashonaland East, using the selective bark stripping method to ensure cambium regeneration. Hydro-ethanolic extracts were prepared via a standardized three-day maceration process and concentrated under reduced pressure using a rotary evaporator. Preliminary phytochemical screening was conducted via colorimetric tube tests (Wagner’s, Ammonia, Ferric Chloride, Salkowski’s, and Foam tests) to identify key secondary metabolites. Metabolic constituents were further mapped using Thin-Layer Chromatography (TLC) on silica gel plates developed with a dichloromethane and ethanol (96:4) mobile phase. Biosafety profiling was rigorously executed through an in-vivo acute oral toxicity study in rat models following OECD Guideline 425 over a 14-day monitoring period....
