Introduction: Neurodegenerative diseases are incurable and debilitating condition that results in progressive degeneration and / or death of nerve cells. Anti-oxidants, Antihyper-glycemics and insulin sensitizing agents are reported for reducing cognitive dysfunction in diabetes. Decreasing GLP-1 degradation using Dipeptidyl Peptidase-4 (DPP-4) inhibitors has been shown to be effective for treating type-2 diabetes and neurodegeneration. Objective: In present study neuroprotective effect of sitagliptin and saxagliptin on streptozotocin induced neurodegenerative mice had been evaluated. Materials and Methods: Neurodegeneration was induced by single dose of Streptozotocin (120mg/kg I.P) and started drug treatment (Sitagliptin and Saxagliptin) after 28 days of Streptozotocin single dose treatment for next 21 days. Streptozotocin induced memory decline was confirmed by behavioural study and Inflexion Ratio – IR. Results: Memory decline was overturned by Saxagliptin (0.5 and 1mg/kg p.o) and Sitagliptin (10 and 20mg/kg p.o). In addition to above, Saxagliptin (1mg/kg p.o) and Sitagliptin (20mg/kg p.o) had reversed levels of dopamine, nor-adrenaline and serotonin in brain as compared to only Streptozotocin treated animals, suggesting neuroprotective activity of chosen two...

Siddha system is one of the ancient systems of medicine. In this system the herbals, metals, minerals and animal products has been used to prepare the medicines for treating various illness. Siddha medicines are divided into internal medicines and external medicines, in which Pugai maruthuvam (Fumigation therapy) is one of the external therapies. Agasthiyar Kuzhambu is one of the classical herbo mineral Siddha formulations, which has been used for 4448 types of diseases as an internal medicine and also used as external medicine in certain conditions. It is a peculiar medicine used as Pugai (fumigation), nasiyam (nasal drops), kalikkam (eye drops) and kudori marunthu (directly applied in cut vessels). An attempt has been made to prove the effect of Pugai maruthuvam (fumigation therapy) on Silaipun (non healing varicose ulcer). In this study 47 years old male patient with non healing varicose ulcer has been enrolled. Pugai maruthuvam (Fumigation therapy) was given for this patient with Agasthiyar kuzhambu fumigation by using a specially designed instrument (fumigation box). The outcome of...

Garcinia kola is a known herbal plant which is widely consumed for many ethnomedicinal uses. This study was aimed at determining the effect of ethanol extract of G. kola seeds on levels of hematological as well as blood indices of liver (aspartate transaminase, alanine transaminase, alkaline phosphatase, total protein, and albumin) and kidney function (creatinine and urea). Extract (50, 100, 200 or 300 mg/kg) was orally administered to different groups of rats (n = 6) daily for thirty days. Control animals were given vehicle (DMSO + distilled water, 2:1). Blood levels of the parameters mentioned above were measured at the end of extract treatment. Livers and kidneys of animals were removed and weighed and organ-to-body weight ratio was obtained. Extract had no effect on serum levels of liver and kidney indices, except that it reduced (P<0.05) ALP level at 300 mg/kg. Organ-to-body weight ratio of liver and kidney were not affected by extract. Furthermore, the extract increased (P<0.001) platelet count, but had no effect on RBC and its indices...

The present study was approached to prepare SMEDDS loaded herbal drug (THDC4-0475RD) for the arthritis through topical delivery by gel formulation(s). The efficiency of prepared SMEDDS and SMEDDS loaded gel to enhance the delivery of anti arthritic drug were also evaluated. Labrafil and Stelliester were used as oil phase. Cremophor used as surfactant and sodium caprylate, cutina HR pH, Lutrol Micro127, Sepitrap 4000, GMS 40-PW-(SG) as co-surfactant. Formulations were optimized using pseudoternary phase diagram. The finalized formulations (F21 and F24) and the optimized formulation F36 were characterized for various parameters. It is concluded that the research proves, the formulated SMEDDS loaded with drug has increased the solubility of poorly water soluble THDC4-0475RD and thereby increases therapeutic efficiency. It fulfilled all the required criteria of a stable SMEDDS such as globule size, size distribution, in vitro diffusion study, and in vitro anti-arthritic study. The SMEDDS gel loaded with THDC4-0475RD would be effective against arthritis through topical...
