To assess the effect of Perillyl alcohol (POH) on the lipid profile of high-fat-diet-induced hyperlipidemia in white male albino Wistar rats, the hyperlipidemia was induced by feeding cholesterol-rich high-fat diet for 45 days in male albino Wistar rats. The decline in the triglycerides, LDL and VLDL was significant at 100 & 200 mg/kg dose of POH compared to Atorvastatin group. The decrease in total cholesterol was significant at 100 and 200 mg/kg doses compared to hyperlipidemic control. The results demonstrate that POH at a dose of 100 and 200 mg/kg body weight lowers the serum triglyceride, LDL, VLDL, total cholesterol and increase HDL level significantly in high-fat-diet-induced hyperlipidemic rats. Though there was no significant effect on the lipid profile at 50 mg/kg dose. Thus, the results of the present study provide scientific validation for the use of Perillyl alcohol (POH) a terpene as an Antihyperlipidemic...

The purpose of the research was to assess the prescribing pattern in geriatrics and to analyze the prescription using World Health Organization (WHO) core prescribing indicators and American Geriatric Society (AGS) Beers criteria 2012 for potentially inappropriate medication use in older adults. This prospective drug utilization study was conducted for a period of 6-months. Patients of either gender, age 65 or above who were admitted in the secondary care hospital. Collected data were analyzed with the WHO core prescribing indicators and American Geriatric Society Beers criteria 2012 for potentially inappropriate medication use in older adults. A total of 200 patients were taken in the study. The majority of the patients were in the age group of 65-70 years (64%) with male predominance (53%). The average number of drugs per encounter was 6.86. Out of 1372 drugs, 1157 drugs (84.32%) were prescribed by generic name. Drugs acting on the cardiovascular system (27.92%) were the most commonly prescribed. In this study, Ranitidine (24.4%) is the most commonly prescribed drug. The study...

Entamoeba histolytic is a protozoan parasite which causes amoebiasis, about 50 million people are affected yearly, and it caused more than 100,000 deaths per year. The study investigates the therapeutic effect of ethanolic and aqueous Tamarindus indica leaves extracts on infected rats with Entamoeba histolytica. Twenty-one Rattus norvegicus rats were infected with Entamoeba histolytica and divided into seven groups (three rats in each group). Groups (1, 2, and 3) were treated with aqueous Tamarindus indica extracts at doses 125, 250, and 500 mg/kg respectively for ten days. Groups (4, 5 and 6) were treated with ethanolic extract of Tamarindus indica at doses 125, 250, and 500 mg/kg respectively for ten days. Group (7) was left untreated as a positive control group. The results showed a significant decrease at p≤0.05 in the numbers of parasite cell from the second day of treatment in all the groups treated with aqueous as well as ethanolic extract. This decrease gradually continued during the days of treatment until it reached zero on the last...

Macrotyloma uniflorum (Lam.) Verdc. also known as horse gram or Kulthi bean has been an underutilized legume crop with immense medicinal importance/potential. It is considered as a rich source of protein, vitamins, and minerals. It is characteristically known for its biotic and abiotic resistance, e.g., resistant to drought, salt, and insects. There are umpteen references available in the traditional medicinal system reverberating its medicinal significance. Its various bioactivities like anti-diabetic, analgesics, anticalcifying, anti-hypercholesterolemic, anti-obesity, antihelmintic, antioxidant, larvicidal and anorectic properties have already been reported. Despite being both sturdy and nutritive food crop, its consumption is very low. The present review attempts to compile medicinal uses of this crop to attract the people for its consumption. Its regular consumption not only adds to health benefits but also provides useful...

Breast cancer (BC) is the foremost cause of deaths among women worldwide. Plants contain diverse bioactive phytochemicals which have been explored by researchers all over the world for their cancer preventive potential. The present review tabulates in-vitro tested plants during 2014-17 against breast cancer cell line. We have collected data of 56 angiosperm families (117 plant species) which was subjected to cluster analysis. On the bases of IC50 values of plant extracts were clustered using cluster analysis Cluster analysis showed a grouping of order Brassicales, Fabales, Lamiales, Caryophyllales, Myrtales, and Apiales. It has been found that most of the plants tested against BC belong to eudicot group of plants. Active plant extract obtained after 24 h, 48 h and 72 h treatment were Mimosa caesalpinnifolia, Ferulago angulat, Magydaris tomentosa, and Ipomea batatas respectively. These plants may further be characterized for active ingredients to check their prospects in breast cancer...
