Osteoporosis is defined as low bone density with micro architectural deterioration of bone tissue leading to enhanced bone fragility and increased fracture risk. Knowing the treatment pattern of osteoporosis is imperative in achieving better health outcomes. Thus the purpose of our study was to assess the treatment pattern of osteoporosis in 8 different medical colleges and hospitals in Bangladesh situated in 2 different districts, Dhaka and Comilla between the periods of September 2015 to April 2016. A pre-designed questionnaire was given to 107 doctors in the hospitals and data was collected on sociodemographic and professional characteristics of the participating physicians along with their learning opportunities and different parameters of treatment and diagnosis. Majority of doctors, 89.7% had internet access at work place for getting updated on osteoporosis, 84.1% attended specialized osteoporosis programs but only 63.6% had subscription in medical journal or website, Around 58.9% practitioners used guidelines for osteoporosis and a greater percentage of doctors, 15.1% preferred bisphosphonates for treatment of osteoporosis. Preferred diagnostic tool was dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry...

Lycopene, a non-provitamin a carotenoid, found in tomatoes, processed tomato products and other fruits, due to which red to pink coloration is observed. Among all the dietary carotenoids, lycopene is one of the most potent naturally and abundantly occurring antioxidant. Lycopene has unique structural features and chemical features which contribute to specific biological properties and pharmacological activities. The antioxidant potential of lycopene may be responsible for its associated health benefits. Dietary consumption of tomatoes and tomato products rich in lycopene are reported to be associated with a decreased risk of chronic diseases, like cancer and various cardiovascular diseases. Further investigations will be required to understand and evaluate mechanism whereby lycopene and its metabolites are proven to possess biological activities in human. This review summarizes the current understanding of lycopene with respect to its role in human health and prevention of various...

This study was undertaken to elucidate the serum antioxidant (Vitamin C), macro – minerals (Ca, Na, and K) and trace elements (Zn, Fe) concentration of in patients with metabolic syndromes. Metabolic syndrome was examined by following the definition developed by the National Cholesterol Education Program Adult Treatment Panel III (NCEP ATPIII). Serum Vitamin C was estimated by phenyl-hydrazine spectrophotometry method, while Macro-minerals and trace elements were determined under coordination of two methods these was flame atomic absorption spectrometry (FAAS) and graphite furnace. This study found that Vitamin C is lowering significantly (p < 0.05) in patients with metabolic syndrome while compared with control subjects. Analysis of serum trace elements (Zn, Fe) and macro minerals (Ca, Na, K) explored low serum concentrations in examined patients significantly either than control group (P < 0.05). Pearson’s correlation analysis revealed negative correlation between blood glucose and Fe, Triglyceride and Zn level were found statistically significant. On the basis of our present study it can be asserted that depletion of Vitamin C, Zn, Fe,...

Centella asiatica (CA) is a reputed medicinal plant that has been shown to have pharmacological effect on skin wound healing. The aim of the study was done to assess the effects of aqueous extract of CA on human dermal fibroblasts in an in vitro model of wound healing. Dermal fibroblasts were cultured with or without supplementation of aqueous extract of CA. Viability and proliferation of the fibroblasts cells were determined by MTT assay and cell cycle were analyzed by flowcytometry. In-vitro re-epithelization was assessed by scratch assay and migration rate was evaluated quantitatively by image analyzer. Gene expression of type I collagen, type III collagen, fibronectin and SMAA2 were studied via real-time RT-PCR. Supplementation with the aqueous extract of CA inhibited the fibroblasts’ proliferation significantly (p<0.05) at high concentration. Moreover, it also inhibited fibroblasts’ migration across the denuded area significantly (p<0.05) at a concentration of 194.15 μg/mL (IC50) when it was compared to the control. The gene expression of type I collagen, type III collagen, fibronectin and SMAA2 decreased...

The objective of the present work is to develop the meter dose nasal formulation of xylometazoline hydrochloride with a view to improve the effectiveness as nasal decongestion. The 32 factorial experimental design was employed for optimization of sodium cholate (X1) and PEG 400 concentration (X2) in the formulation. All the possible experimental trials were carried out according to design layout. The experimental model was further validated by six check point batches. The optimized formulation contains 1.5% w/v sodium cholate and 20% v/v PEG 400. The formulation was further evaluated for its drug content, pH, viscosity, spray content uniformity, in vitro-diffusion studies, pump delivery, spray pattern, sterility, and stability study. The percentage diffusion and viscosity were observed 89.33 ± 0.57% and 25.33 ± 0.57 centipoise respectively. For spray pattern of optimized formulation, the ovality obtained was 1.217, while perimeter and area were found to be 104.56 mm and 791.5 mm2 respectively. The meter dose nasal formulation shows the superior performance during in-vitro drug release compared with currently marketed formulations, which...
