Objective: Present study involved comparison of thin layer chromatograms and quantification of valerenic acid (VA) in four morphologically similar rhizome drugs – Valeriana jatamansi, Nordostachys jatamansi, Selinum vaginatum and Ferula sumbul. Materials and methods: Ethanol extract of the four drugs were prepared under standard conditions and VA content was determined using TLC densitometry. Results: Comparative fingerprint chromatograms of the four drugs were developed and mean content of VA was calculated. S. vaginatum contains maximum VA content (360.22 µg/g). Conclusion: The four closely allied drugs could easily be differentiated based on thin layer chromatograms and VA...

An RP-HPLC method to be used to quantitate the amount of a biomarker in the roots of Paullinia pinnata was developed. The root bark was milled and extracted and the dry powder obtained taken through column chromatography (CC). The biomarker was then isolated. The melting point of the biomarker was determined and found to be 117-119 oC. A RP-HPLC method was successfully developed and used to quantify the biomarker in the chloroform extract. The mobile phase used was Methanol:Water (9:1) with an injection volume of 100µl and a range of 1.000. The method employs a Phenomenex Kromasil C-8, 5µ, 250mm × 4.6mm, 100Ǻ reverse phase column at a flow rate of 1.3ml/min, and a wavelength of 210nm. The method gave a retention time of 2.9687 ± 0.2657 (n=15). The percentage content of the biomarker in the root of Paullinia pinnata was determined to be 0.052009±0.004321% w/w (n=12). The HPLC method was validated for linearity, repeatability, intermediate precision, and robustness. The limits of detection and quantitation were also...

The growing impact of infections caused by dermatophytes i.e. Trichophyton, Microsporum and Epidermophyton is not upto the mark in their treatments via conventional methods due to resistance, side effects, and high toxicity. Over prescription and overuse of traditional antifungal agents, high side effects, less eco-friendly nature, high manufacturing costs, high management costs etc., have stimulated the research for alternative natural drugs, such as herbal extract, essential oils and some commercially available compounds. This paper reviews the antidermatophytic activity of various commercially available and conventionally available herbals from different plants and their major role in prevention of prevalent strains dermatophytes. The mode of action of dermatophytes for causing dermatophytosis as well as mode and mechanism of action of various antifungal agents (herbals extracts, oils, suspensions and commercially available compounds) have also proposed. In vitro susceptibility tests and in vivo models used in antidermatophytic assays as well as the mechanism of action of dermatophytes are involved under the perspective of the potential use of herbals as antifungal agents in the clinical...

A collective assessment of all the morphometric measurements like size, weight, color and shape of the parathyroid gland is important in the determination of its normalcy. After that the histological examination for stromal and intracellular fatty content helps to determine the normalcy of the gland. There have been several studies on morphology of human parathyroid gland, but the grand total of cases accurately recorded, so far as I have been able to collect them from the literature, is comparatively small. Further till now there is no study done on area and volume of parathyroid gland. It seemed therefore that a careful study of additional cases is needed. This study was conducted on 60 autopsy specimens in the department of anatomy in collaboration with the department of forensic medicine. A total 203 parathyroid glands were identified in relation to posterior border of thyroid gland in 60 post-mortem specimens. In the present study the average size including length, breadth, and thickness of parathyroid is 5.12 x 3.18 x 1.15mm. Average area...

Nurses being one of the important members of the healthcare team, play a significant role in providing care and education. Current effective treatments for asthma are in the form of metered-dose inhalers. An effective control is achieved only when the patient is comfortable to use the metered-dose inhaler device correctly. This study was therefore planned to evaluate their knowledge and to assess the effect of a training programme in a tertiary healthcare facility. The aim of the study is to evaluate the effect of education intervention on nurses, knowledge of asthma and metered-dose inhaler technique. This was a pre and post intervention study which involved 45 second year B.Sc nursing students of BMCRI, Bangalore. Pre test consisted of self administered questionnaire about asthma knowledge and demonstration of inhaler technique using pMDI (pressurized metered-dose inhaler). After this, education intervention was given which was followed by a post test. The total mean percentage score of asthma knowledge increased significantly from 63% to 85.5% after education intervention. pMDI demonstration was very poor...
