Background: Among the traditionally used sex enhancement natural remedies in south eastern Nigeria, L. dulcis root is very popular because of its quick onset of action. However, its use has not been scientifically validated. This study therefore investigated the effects of its ethanol extract and fractions on sexual behavior in male albino rats. Methods: Forty-five male albino rats were randomly divided into nine groups A1 – D1, A2 –D2 and E. Animals in groups A1 – D1 received daily doses of 500mg/kg of ethanol extract and fractions (n-Hexane, Ethylacetate and Methanol) respectively while groups A2 –D2 received 1000mg/kg. Group E served as the control and receive 1ml of 10% tween 80. Equal numbers of female albino rats (45) were made receptive by hormonal treatment with estradiol benzoate (10µg/100g) and progesterone (0.5mg/100g). Sexual behavior parameters in male rats when paired with receptive females were monitored on days 1, 3 and 5. Male serum testosterone concentration was also determined. Results: At 500 and 1000mg/kg, the ethanol extract and methanol fraction of...

The aim of the study was to formulate and evaluate natural palm oil based Diclofenac sodium suppositories. The formulated natural palm oil based suppositories were compared with suppositories of water soluble bases (PEG 4000 and 6000) and lipid soluble base (cocoa butter). The in-vitro drug release rate studies were carried out by using dissolution apparatus. The in-vitro release pattern of diclofenac sodium from the formulated suppositories F1, F2, F3 and F4, were found to be 9.51% to 73.67%, 16.73 to 84.22%, 65.04 % to 87.54% and 50.76% to 83.54% after 30 min and 3 hrs respectively. The rapid in-vitro release rate was shown by F3 (Formulation with PEG 4000 as base). F3 can be used for immediate action. The in-vitro release rate of F1 (with natural palm oil base) was found to be moderate and consistent when compared with all other formulations. Natural palm oil base can be considered as a suitable base for sustained release suppositories. Natural palm oil suppository base can be used as a base for...

Anxiety and depression is basically a disorder of the present modern world and its prevalence is seen increasing day by day. According to WHO, anxiety and depression will be the second largest cause of disability worldwide by year 2020. The major problem associated with this disorder is that common masses are unaware about this disorder and hence less than 25% of those affected have access to appropriate treatments. The medications currently used for treatment of this disorder are based on the earlier theories of anxiety and depression. These medications have many side effects as well as are associated with tolerance and dependence on prolonged usage. This article mainly focuses on the new theory involved in neurobiology of this disorder and drugs which can be developed on basis of the...

A sensitive, selective, precise and stability indicating high performance thin layer chromatographic method of analysis of Phenobarbitone both as a bulk drug and in formulations was developed and validated in pharmaceutical dosage form. The method employed TLC aluminium plates precoated with silica gel 60F-254 as the stationary phase. The solvent system consisted of dichloromethane: ethyl acetate: glacial acetic acid (9.5:0.5:0.1 v/v/v/v). This system was found to give compact spots for Phenobarbitone (Rf value of 0.70). Phenobarbitone was subjected to acid and alkali hydrolysis, oxidation, photodegradation and dry heat treatment also the degraded products were well separated from the pure drug. Densitometric analysis of Phenobarbitone was carried out in the absorbance mode at 244 nm. The linear regression data for the calibration plots showed good linear relationship with r2=/0.998/ in the concentration range of 200-/600 ng/band. The method was validated for precision, accuracy, ruggedness and recovery. The limits of detection and quantitation were 5.82 and 14.60 ng per spot, respectively. The drug undergoes degradation under acidic, alkaline conditions, oxidation and...

Problem Statement: Do the soil Actinomycetes do have Antimicrobial and Petrol degradation potential? An intriguing question. Actinomycetes are continues to be a subject of study with reference to their Antimicrobial and degradative potential. However studies have been done is limited. Our object was to study its Antimicrobial activity in wide spectrum and to study its degradation potential on Petrol. Approach: In this study we have isolated total 5 Actinomycetes from the Ganga river bed. All the isolates later purified and identified by various Morphological and Biochemical test. Here Nocardia was subjected to antimicrobial test against Streptococcus, Mucor and Aspergillus and it was also subjected to degradation test against Petrol. Result: The 5 isolates are Streptomyces, Micromonospora, Micromono sporangium and 2 different strain of Nocardia (Na1 and Na2). The 2 strains of Nocardia are active against Streptococcus (Na1 29.6mm, Na2 26.6mm), Mucor (Na1 12.5mm, Na2 22.5mm) and Aspergillus (Na1 50%, Na2 60%). They also degrade Petrol very effectively, decrease in total organic carbon of the medium was observed during the...
