Cadmium (Cd) is a toxic heavy metal in the environment. The aim of this study was to investigate the potential effect of Cd on cholinergic and bioenergetic systems in three brain regions: cerebral cortex, cerebellum and hippocampus. The young albino rats (3 months) were exposed to low dose of Cd (1.5 mg/kg body weight) and high dose of Cd (3 mg/kg body weight) through intraperitoneal injection daily for a period of 3 weeks. A separate batch of rats were given α-tocopherol at a dose for a period of one week along with low and high dose of Cd. In this study, we observed that the AChE activity and ACh content in synaptosomal fractions and Mg2+-ATPase and Na+/K+-ATPase activities in mitochondrial fractions. We found the decrease in AChE, Mg2+-ATPase and Na+/K+-ATPase activities and increase in ACh content compared to control. The high dose of Cd treated rats showed maximal decrease in the AChE, Mg2+-ATPase and Na+/K+-ATPase activities and ACh content compared to low dose of Cd treated rats. The maximal...

Lantana camara Linn. is considered as a notorious weed and a popular ornamental plant. It is noted from ancient time that plants have been an excellent source of medicine. Since very long time Lantana camara has been reported as one of the most important medicinal plants in the world. Lantana camara is used in traditional medicine system for the treatment of cuts, swellings, ulcers, cataract, bilious fever, itches, eczema, and rheumatism. Various parts of Lantana camara plant are used in the treatment of cold, headache, whooping cough, asthma, chicken pox, bronchitis, eye injuries, and arterial hypertension. L. camara has scientifically studied for various therapeutic activities like antibacterial, antioxidant, antipyretic, insecticidal, antimicrobial, wound healing, etc. Nowadays this plant Lantana camara is worked in several recent advanced techniques like phyto-extraction of heavy metals, phytoremediation of particulate pollution and many others. Various literature has reported the phytoconstituents present in all parts of Lantana camara. In last few decades, scientist and researchers throughout the globe have elaborately examined the chemical composition of the...

Osteoarthritis is characterized by degeneration of cartilage and its underlying bone within a joint as well as bony overgrowth. The main causes of Osteoarthritis are abnormality in limb, in development of joint, hereditary factors, history of joint injury, stress etc. Conventionally analgesics are used to reduce the pain, inflammation, joint swelling and stiffness. But these drugs have many side effects like gastro intestinal irritation, nausea, ulcers or bleeding, fluid retention, hypertension, renal insufficiency etc. Curcumin acts as an inhibitor for COX, 5-LOX and glutathione S Transferase. It also lowers the production of histamine. Its anti arthritic action in combination with NSAID was screened in this study. Animals were divided into 5 groups. Group 1 was control group. Group 2 was disease control with the induction of arthritis using nalidixic acid 40mg/Kg subcutaneously. Group 3 was administered with standard drug Diclofenac sodium (13mg/Kg) orally. The group 4 received standard drug along with Curcumin (200mg/Kg orally). Group 5 animals received pretreatment with curcumin (200mg/Kg) before the induction of Osteoarthritis. Physical or...

A health study was conducted in Northern Region of Bangladesh to determine the prevalence and cause of taking psychotropic drugs. The health survey was involved 615 patients who are taking psychotropic drugs and found 63.58% patient is male and 36.42% is female. The majority of patients are student (45.65%), housewife (19.02%) and service holder (13.33%). The age of patients is 15 – 24 years 35.93% and 25 -34 years 31.38%. Supreme cause of taking psychotropic drug is tension 25.37%, depression 18.21%, sleeping disorder 10.56% and pain 10.24%. The patients are taking anxiolytic drug (59.02%), antipsychotic drug (19.84%) and antidepressant drug (20.65%). The food habit of the patient’s shows that their preferred food is sour (16.26%), sweet (31.87%), spiced (23.58%), meat (47.97%) and soft drinks (30.41%). Among the patients, 31.06% are addicted to narcotics and 38.04% are smokers. It is alarming that about 35.77% of the patients are taking this type of drug without the concern of physician which might cause serious adverse effects. It also found that there is...

Synthesis and characterization of Co(II), Ni(II), Cu(II) and Pd(II) complexes of ligand N‘-[(2Z,3E)-3-(hydroxyimino) butan-2-ylidene] benzohydrazide are reported. The ligand is monobasic and bidentate in nature. The molar conductivities reveal that all the metal complexes are non-electrolyte. The metal complexes have been characterized on the basis of spectral and magnetic studies. Co(II) ion forms brown complex Co(BBH)2 which has low spin square planar geometry. The diamagnetic nature and the spectral features of the brown Ni(BBH)2 complex suggests the square planar environment for the Ni(II) ion. Ni(BBH)2 adds on two molecules of pyridine to form a high spin six coordinate adduct. The room temperature magnetic susceptibility measurements of the pyridine adduct of Ni(BBH)2 indicates octahedral nature of the complex which is further supported by the absorption spectrum. The magnetic data in case of Cu(BBH)2 indicates presence of one unpaired electron in Cu(II) ion. The EPR spectrum of Cu(BBH)2 suggests the square planar geometry which is further supported by electronic absorption spectrum of the complex. Studies reveal square planar geometry for Pd(BBH)2...
