Marine algae are one of the largest sources for biogenic compounds. They produce a wide variety of chemically active metabolites. They are found to possess significant antioxidant, and phytochemical activities. Macroalgae provides a great variety of metabolites and natural bioactive compounds with antimicrobial activity, such as polysaccharides, polyunsaturated fatty acids, phlorotannins and other phenolic compounds, and carotenoids. Several species of brown algae have been investigated for their bioactive natural products. The aim of the present study was to investigate the antioxidant, antibacterial activity and GC-MS analysis of active compounds present in the methanol extract of the brown algae, Padina tetrastromatica. For antioxidant activity, DPPH radical assay, ABTS radical cation scavenging assay, phosphomolybdenum reduction assay and Fe3+ reducing power assay were carried out. The maximum DPPH radical scavenging activity was 54.78%. The extract also exhibited significant antibacterial activity against the clinical pathogens, Vibrio cholera, Shigella flexneri and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The phytochemical analysis showed the presence of alkaloids, terpenoids, steroids, flavonoids and phenolic compounds. GC-MS analysis revealed the presence of fatty...

Okra is a cultigen (a plant that has been altered by humans through a process of selective breeding). The exact origin of okra is unknown, but it is thought to have come from Africa, where it has been grown as a crop for centuries. Evidence suggests it was grown in Egypt as long ago as 2,000 BC. Today it is widely cultivated for its edible green fruits, which are harvested when immature (after 3 – 5 days of development), and are infamous for their slimy mucilage. It plays a vital role to preserve our health. In recent times, the use of herbal products has increased tremendously in the western world as well as developed countries. India is one of the most medico-culturally diverse countries in the world where the medicinal plant sector is part of a time-honoured tradition that is respected even today. Medicinal plants are believed to be safer and proved elixir in the treatment of various ailments. Abelmoschus esculentus (Okra) is an important medicinal plant of tropical...

The health and nutritional status of school children is an index of national investment in the development of its future manpower. Malnutrition affects the child’s physical and cognitive growth and increases the susceptibility to infections while having an adverse impact on economic growth of the country indirectly. The objective of this study is to assess the nutritional status of rural and urban school going children (16 – 18 years) of Bankura district, West Bengal. A total of 80 school children [rural school children (Group 1; n = 40) and urban school children (Group 2; n = 40)] belonging to the age group of 16 to 18 years and the study were conducted from the month of September 2015 to February 2016. The important clinical signs like pallor, hair changes, eye changes, teeth changes, skeletal changes, goitre, skin changes and bones etc., were found significantly higher for Group 1. Mean height, weight and body mass index were significantly higher in the Group 2 school children compared to Group 1. The...

Poor aqueous solubility is the main problem in development of effective formulation which affects stability and bioavailability of drug formulation. So there is need of systematic formulation approach to make such poorly soluble drugs bioavailable. In the present investigation attempt has been made to investigate the effect of soluplus on solubility of gliclazide by preparing its nanocrystals. Nanocrystals of gliclazide with soluplus were prepared by using drug: carrier ratios of 1:0.5, 1:1, 1:2, 1:4, 1:6 and 1:8 by anti-solvent precipitation technique. Physiochemical analysis demonstrated the crystalline nature of particles and amongst all formulations 1:2 ratio provided the highest degree of gliclazide solubility i.e., 2.5027±0.77mg/ml as compared to pure drug 0.4918±0.51mg/ml. This increase in solubility may due to increase in surface area and or characteristics of nanocrystals and soluplus. The prepared nanocrystals were characterized by Fourier Transformed Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), Differential Scanning Colorimetry (DSC), X-Ray Diffraction pattern (XRD), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). The prepared nanocrystals with highest solubility was formulated into tablet and evaluated for hardness, friability, drug content, disintegration...

Aim of the study: This study evaluates the analgesic, anti-inflammatory and antipyretic activities of the aqueous, methanol and n-hexane extracts of Trichosanthes dioica Roxb. to provide experimental evidence for its traditional use such as fever, pain and inflammation. Materials and methods: Investigations on the analgesic effects of Trichosanthes dioica Roxb. was carried out by acetic acid-induced writhing using Aspirin as standard. The anti-inflammatory activity was observed by carrageenin-induced edema of the hind paw of rats using indomethacin as standard. The antipyretic activity was observed by yeast induced pyrexia in rat using Paracetamol as standard. Results: It has been shown that the methanol and aqueous extracts significantly reduced acetic acid-induced writhing response in mice. The methanol and aqueous extracts remarkably inhibited the increase in vascular permeability induced by acetic acid and also significantly decreased the carrageenin-induced rat paw edema perimeter. The methanol and aqueous extracts also shows reduction of body temperature in yeast induced pyrexia in rat model. Conclusion: The results show that the methanol and aqueous extracts have analgesic...
