Medicinal plants are a reservoir of biologically active compounds with therapeutic properties, and in that context, Opuntia ficus indica and other Opuntia species are of immense importance because of their nutraceutical and pharmaceutical values along with their anti-inflammatory effects, hypoglycemic, anti-hyperlipidemic effects, anti-atherogenic and anti-spermatogenic potential. The cactus Opuntia is a xerophytic plant grown in more than thirty countries, including Mexico, South America, South Africa and India. All parts of the plant, including pear, roots, cladodes, seeds and juice, have these pharmacological properties, which have been attributed to the presence of high content of phenolic acids, flavonoids such as quercetin, kaempferol, anthocyanin and ascorbate etc., and pigments such as carotenoids, betalains, tannins etc. Other reported phytochemical components such as biopeptides, phytoalbumins, minerals such as vitamin B1, B2, B3 and Vitamin C, soluble fibers also add to the medicinal properties of Opuntia spp. presence of these bioactive has made Opuntia a high potential plant that can be investigated for commercial production and consumption as a neutraceutical. The present review provides...

This study was designed to evaluate the phytochemical findings for the presence of Alkaloids, Flavonoids, Phenols, and Terpenoids, and the phytochemical profile of chloroform and ethanol extracts of Panicum trypheron were analyzed using GC-MS (Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry) method. The leaves were dried, powdered, and soaked in chloroform and ethanol, then subjected to GC-MS analysis by using Clarus 680 Gas chromatography. The unknown spectrum was compared with that of the known by using NIST (National Institute of Standards and Technology) database, which revealed the presence of different chemical entities in each of the extracts. The compounds are pharmacologically and biologically noteworthy. The extracts showed good antibacterial activity when tested against selected bacterial strains. This preliminary study gives an overview of the plant, which contains bioactive compounds and is therefore proposed as a pharmaceutically important...

Neurodegenerative diseases are progressive degeneration of certain nerve cells causing ataxias and dementia affecting millions of people worldwide. Transdermal drug delivery systems – “patches” represent an attractive alternative to the conventional method and have made an important contribution to the management of the various medical conditions. A transdermal patch is a medicated adhesive patch which delivers drug via skin to the systemic circulation in a controlled manner. The advancement of various sophisticated transdermal delivery technologies led to of increase in the number of approved drugs. This route of administration has several innate and major advantages that have the potential to benefit various patient populations, including those with nervous system disorders. The transdermal route is an ideal route for the management of chronic neurological conditions as they are capable of providing continued drug delivery and maintaining steadier plasma concentration of drugs thereby reducing adverse events. Moreover, a transdermal patch is convenient, efficient in enhancing medication therapy and patient compliance. This article reviews the rationale and scope of the transdermal route...

This study aims to valorizeten medicinal plants traditionally used for oral care in Benin by producing scientific data on their toxicities, antimicrobial activities, and chemical properties. The ten medicinal plants (Zanthoxylum zanthoxyloides, Vitellaria paradoxa, Prosopis africana, Dialium guineense, Pseudocedrela kotschyi, Parkia biglobosa, Azadirachta indica, Diospyros mespiliformis, Anogeissus leiocarpa and Bridelia ferruginea) were identified following an ethnobotanical survey conducted in Benin. With the exception of the hydroethanolic extract of Z. zanthoxyloides, all extracts have an LC50 greater than 0.1 mg/mL, indicating that these plants are non-cytotoxic. Of the ten extracts tested, only the hydroethanolic extract of Z. zanthoxyloides stem has no activity on the bacterial strains used. The results of the antibacterial test show that the largest diameter of inhibition was obtained in the extract of A. leiocarpa on Escherichia coli ATCC 25922, a reference strain with 25.67mm. The highest levels of total flavonoids (FVT) and total polypenols (TPP) are recorded respectively in P. kotschyi (145.86±0.7 EC/gMS) and D. guineense (70.194±0.220 EGA/g Ms). The antiradical powers of the extracts with...

The study was designed to optimize cultural conditions for enhanced production of bioactive compounds by Streptomyces olivo-verticillatus VLK-15 isolated from mangrove ecosystem of South Coast of Andhra Pradesh, India. The soil dilution plate technique was employed for the isolation of actinobacteria using starch-casein agar (ISP-6) medium. The potent strain was identified as Streptomyces olivoverticillatus VLK-15 based on polyphasic taxonomy. The productivity of the strain was enhanced by amending the medium (ISP-2) with mannitol (0.5%), peptone (0.5%), and K2HPO4 (0.05%) adjusted to pH 7.0 and incubated with the culture at 30ºC for ninety-six hours. The secondary metabolites produced under optimized conditions exhibited high antimicrobial activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria as well as fungi. Hence, it could be a possible source for novel and potential antimicrobial...
