There is a paucity of data on studies evaluating trace elements and antioxidant levels and susceptibility of offspring of diabetic parents to type 2 diabetes in Nigerian population. This study evaluated the serum level of some trace elements and antioxidants among apparently healthy individuals with a family history of type2 diabetes mellitus (FH-T2DM). This was a cross-sectional study involving 122 Students (aged between 18-30 years) consisting of 60 apparently healthy subjects with FH-T2DM and 62 apparently healthy subjects without FH-T2DM. Serum levels of Cr, Zn, Se, and Mn and catalase and superoxide dismutase of these subjects were measured using atomic absorption spectrophotometric technique and spectrophotometric technique, respectively. The plasma glucose, body mass index (BMI), waist circumferences, and a waist-to-hip ratio of these subjects were also determined using standard methods. Results from this study showed that mean fasting plasma glucose level was significantly higher (p=0.001); serum levels of Cr was significantly lower (p=0.04) while serum levels of Zn, Mn, Se, SOD and Catalase did not differ significantly (p>0.05) in those...

Carissa carandas Linn. belonging to the family Apocynaceae, is an underutilized fruit plant. C. carandas has been used in many ethno medicines 6, 40, 30. Genetic diversity is a ubiquitous feature of all species in nature. ISSR markers are useful in areas of genetic diversity, phylogenetic studies, gene tagging, genome mapping, and evolutionary biology in a wide range of plant species 4, 12. In this investigation, 9 ISSR primers were used for fingerprinting of 9 different accessions of C. carandas grown in a different location. Of these 9 primers, the amplification of only 8 primers (4, 5, 6 and 7, HB10, HB12, HB13 and HB15) were satisfactory and reproducible. Results of the ISSR fingerprint showed 473 amplified fragments; 134 of them were polymorphic (28.33%). The sizes of the amplified fragments were ranged between 200 and 1700 bp in length. The primer HB-10 showed the highest polymorphism (46.67%), while primer 6 showed the lowest with only (8.70%). The results obtained in this study validate that ISSR is useful markers in...

Urolithiasis is the most prevalent urinary tract disorder in males. Alfuzosin is a selective antagonist of post-synaptic α1a adrenoceptor, causing relaxation of smooth muscle in the bladder and prostate, which results in an improvement of urine flow and prevents ureter stones. The present study was aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of Alfuzosin on rats as a preventive and curative agent against the development of urolithiasis. Urolithiasis was induced by oral administration of 0.75% v/v ethylene glycol and 2% w/v ammonium chloride in drinking water for 15 days in rats. Ethylene glycol feeding resulted in hyperoxaluria and a significant (p<0.001) increased in urinary calcium, phosphate, and serum creatinine, uric acid levels. By oral administration of Alfuzosin at the dose of 1 mg/kg and 2 mg/kg for 15 days as a preventive regimen and from 8th day to 15th day as a curative regimen, significantly (P<0.01) reduced the calcium, phosphate, creatinine and uric acid levels in rats. The histopathological studies showed the disrupted renal parenchyma, degenerative changes in glomeruli, calcification in...

A sensitive liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) technique was developed and validated for the quantification of lenvatinib in plasma samples. Plasma samples were presented by selecting the Liquid-Liquid extraction (LLE) method with ethyl acetate. The technique was developed and validated with respect to the parameters specificity, sensitivity, carry-over, recovery, precision, matrix effect, accuracy, and stability. The lenvatinib and IS (lenvatinib-D4) were eluted within 3.5 min on Symmetry-C18 column (50 mm × 4.6mm × 5µm) with 0.1% V/V formic acid in acetonitrile, methanol, and 0.1% V/V formic acid in water in the ratio of 70:20:10 as mobile phase with 0.70 ml/min infusion flow rate. This analytical method was also applied successfully to study bio-availability studies in 6 healthy rabbits. LVB was shown Tmax of 3.452 ± 0.754, mean Cmax of 89 ± 3.045, AUC0t of 1700.01 ± 257.892, and AUC0t of 3665.3 ± 259.59 for Test formulation. The method can be useful in the quantification of lenvatinib in clinical research organizations for bioavailability studies and in forensic...

Ruellia tuberosa, commonly called Minnie root, has plenty of applications in herbal medicine due to the presence of several bioactive compounds. A simple, efficient, and reproducible in-vitro plant regeneration protocol was developed for Ruellia tuberosa. The cotyledonary nodal explants were excised from seedlings were inoculated on Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium supplemented with various concentrations of BAP and NAA, respectively. The highest numbers of 9.86 ± 0.15 shoots/explant were obtained in MS medium augmented with BAP (2.0 mg L-1) and NAA (1.0 mg L-1). The micro shoots induced per explant significantly increased with the supplementation of BAP to auxin-containing medium. The results showed that maximum percentage of multiple micro shoots 89%, with a number (13.80 ± 0.26) shoots / explant was found on MS medium supplemented with BAP (2.0 mg L-1) and NAA (1.5 mg L-1). Further, the highest frequency of micro shoots was produced on MS medium supplemented with TDZ (0.3 mg L-1) and AgNO3 (0.4 mg L-1) for large-scale production. The highest frequency of root induction (96%)...
