Various medicinal properties have been attributed to natural herbs. The use of traditional medicine is widespread in India. These herbal remedies are an important source for the discovery of new antimicrobials against the resistant strains of bacteria. Asavas and Arishtas are specially prepared ayurvedic medicines. They are alcoholic solutions containing all the active ingredients of the drugs of which they are compounded. Asavas are prepared by using herbal juices or herbs soaked in water while Arishtas are prepared by decoction. Different parts of medicinal plants are used traditionally for the preparation of specific asava or arishta that is effective against specific disorder. About 25 different medicinal plants commonly used were selected. Dried powders of these plants were extracted in water. The antibacterial activity of the extracts were then tested by agar well diffusion method against standard cultures of Escherichia coli, Klebsiella aerogenes, Proteus vulgaris, Salmonella typhimurium, Staphylococcus aureus and Bacillus thuringenesis. The individual extracts of Emblica officinalis, Terminalia chebula, Terminalia belerica andWoodfordia fructicosa, Jaggery were active against the test...

The principal derivative of chitin is Chitosan, produced by alkaline deacetylation of chitin, is a non-toxic, biodegradable and biocompatible, cationic polymer. Chitosan has been widely used in the formulation of particulate drug delivery systems to achieve controlled drug delivery. The main objective of the study was to develop enteric coated Chitosan capsule containing budesonide for targeting the ileum and ascending colon sites which were mainly affected in Crohn’s disease. This work describes a new colonic drug delivery system utilizing capsule shells prepared from Chitosan. Coating of drug filled Chitosan capsule with pH dependent enteric polymer like Eudragit S100 / L100 (1:1) provides it a special feature of releasing drug at colonic pH. The in-vivo study involves the Gamma scintigraphic evaluation of enteric coated Chitosan capsule. The enteric coated Chitosan capsule proved to be efficient to deliver the drug at ileum and ascending colon in Crohn’s...

The present study enlightens to enhance the dissolution profile, absorption efficiency and bioavailability of water insoluble drug like Ezetimibe. It is a poorly soluble, highly permeable drug and the rate of its oral absorption is often controlled by the dissolution rate in the gastrointestinal tract. There are several techniques to enhance the dissolution of poorly soluble drugs, in which the “liquisolid compacts” is a promising technique. Different formulations were prepared by using polyethylene glycol-400 as a non-volatile liquid vehicle, with drug and vehicle ratios of 1:5 and 1:7.5, microcrystalline cellulose (Avicel PH 102), starch were used as carrier materials and nm-sized silica gel (Aerosil-200) was used as coating materials. The empirical method introduced by Spireas and Bolton was applied to calculate the amounts of coating and carrier materials required to prepare Ezetimibe liquisolid tablets. Based upon this method, improved flow characteristics and hardness of the formulation has been achieved by changing the proportion of carrier and coating material ratio from 20:1 to 5:1. They were characterized for different physical...

Chronic systemic diseases are diseases which require long term drug therapy. Parenteral controlled drug delivery system is often used to treat these diseases. Vesicular bodies like liposome are commonly used as Parenteral controlled depot formulation. It possess disadvantage that they are rapidly removed from body by phagocytosis because they are considered as hapten. So formulating a slow release depot formulation is a challenge for pharmaceutical scientist. Erythrocytes as they are derived from human body, they serves as a potential carrier for loading drugs intended for chronic systemic diseases that require long term therapy. Erythrocytes unlike other carrier possess biocompatibility, biodegradability and have long circulation half-lives. They act as slow release depot formulation by following a zero order kinetic drug release profile and without being attack by the complement system, provided the method adopted for loading should not cause any structural deformity or disturbance in lipid packing. This review will give an insight to those researchers who wish to work with erythrocyte for using it as a slow release depot...

Pharmaceutical nanoparticles are submicron-sized, colloidal vehicles that carry drugs to the target or release drugs in a controlled way in the body. Controlled drug delivery offers advantages like reduced dosing frequency, better therapeutic control, reduced side effects, and, consequently, better patient compliance. Biodegradable polymers are utilized to prepare Nanoparticles which offers advantages like versatile degradation kinetics, non-toxicity, and biocompatibility. Nanoparticles can be prepared by various techniques & are evaluated for parameters like: Particle size, Morphological properties, Thermal properties, surface chemistry & drug release etc. Nanoparticles can be converted into dry form & formulated in various dosage forms depending on the route of application. Several marketed formulation based on controlled drug delivery are also available which is the fruitful result of the development of biodegradable polymer, newer techniques for preparation, scale up procedure & better control over all the required manufacturing...
