Background: Periodontal disease is one of the two main and most prevalent oral diseases all over the world. Treatment strategies are diverse. To date, scaling and root planing (SRP) is still the gold standard non-surgical therapy for periodontitis. Systemically administered antibiotics can be used as an adjunct to SRP to improve the treatment outcome of periodontitis. Purpose: To compare clinical outcome of systemically administered doxycycline versus combination of amoxicillin and metronidazole as an adjunct to SRP in the management of chronic periodontitis patients. Methods: This study was conducted on forty-two moderate to severe generalized chronic periodontitis patients who received non-surgical periodontal therapy. Following SRP, patients were randomly allocated to one of the following groups; group (I) received Doxycycline (loading dose 200 mg and maintenance dose 100 mg/day) for fifteen days, group (II) received a combination therapy of amoxicillin and metronidazole (750 mg/day) for eight days and group III (control group) which was treated by SRP without administration of systemic antibiotic therapy. The periodontal parameters; Plaque index (PI), Gingival index...

Cordia obliqua Willd var. obliqua. is a medium sized, broad leaved deciduous tree. It is found growing not only all over Asia but nearly the whole of the globe. Cordia obliqua (F. Boraginaceae) is traditionally used against fever, chest disease, leprosy, gonorrhoea and helminthes. Bark is bitter, mild astringent and tonic and used in general debility and convalescence. Decoction of the bark is used as a gargle in sore mouth. Juice obtained from the bark relieves severe colicky pains. Bark is anthelmintic, constipating, cooling, depurative and used in vitiated conditions of kapha, pitta and leprosy. In view of its medicinal importance, a complete study on macroscopic, microscopic characters and analytical parameters of stem bark have been made and presented. Histological studies were conducted by infiltration method. Anatomical features of the bark were studied using transectional, radial and tangential longitudinal sections. Powder characters were analysed and micrometrial measurements of the cells/tissues were carried out. Analytical parameters include ash values, extractive values and crude fibre content. Findings of this work are...

Flavonoid isolated from Mimosa pudica was evaluated for its radical scavenging and immunomodulatory activities in-vitro. Aim of this study is to isolate flavonoid from Mimosa pudica and to determine its antioxidant and immunomodulatory properties. Flavonoid was isolated from dried samples of Mimosa pudica using soxhlet extraction in 80% methanol and purified by column chromatography. Various tests were done for the presence of flavonoid, and the isolate was confirmed as flavonoid by Thin Layer Chromatography (TLC) and Fourier Transform Infrared (FT-IR) analysis. Antioxidant activity of the isolated flavonoid was evaluated using assays such as the 1, 1‑diphenyl‑2‑picryl‑hydrazil (DPPH) radical scavenging assay and hydroxyl radical scavenging assay. In-vitro assay of immunomodulatory activity of flavonoid isolated from Mimosa pudica was done by using lymphocytes isolated from a human blood sample. The isolated flavonoid exhibited a dose-dependent enhancement in activity in DPPH assay and hydroxyl radical scavenging assays. In DPPH assay 10μg of ascorbic acid, equivalent activity was shown by 30μg of isolated flavonoid. The isolate exhibited strong DPPH radical scavenging activity with...

Onychomycosis representing about 30% of mycotic cutaneous infections is the fungal infection that affects the nails. Although not life-threatening, it adversely affects the psychology of the patient whose nails become yellow, discolored, brittle, and unsightly. It may also pose serious problems in immunocompromised individuals. The current market of products for the treatment of onychomycosis includes topical antifungal gels, creams, medicated nail lacquers, and oral antifungals in the form of tablets. Other techniques like nail etching, use of microneedles & mesoscissioning are being studied. The authors propose the formulation and evaluation of glycerogelatin for an effective transungual delivery. Glycerogelatin are semisolid dosage forms comprising of glycerine, gelatin, water and drug which upon heating to temperatures slightly above body temperature melt and can be applied over the affected area. These upon cooling harden, cover the area and release the drug. The authors propose the use of HPMC for an effective glycerogetin formulation. This research article is an attempt to bring into the limelight the potential of glycerogelatins for transungual drug...

The present study was aimed to determine whether the methanol and aqueous extracts from the medicinal plant, Withania somnifera (root), could inhibit acetylcholinesterase (AChE) in scopolamine-induced Alzheimer’s rats. The rats were randomly divided into different groups of 5 each: normal control rats treated with saline; Scopolamine (2mg/Kg b.w. i.p.) – induced Alzheimer’s rats treated with saline; Scopolamine-induced Alzheimer’s rats post-treated with methanol extract of three different concentrations (100, 200 and 300mg/Kg b.w. oral); Scopolamine-induced Alzheimer’s rat post-treated with aqueous extract of three different concentrations (100, 200 and 300mg/Kg b.w. oral); and scopolamine-induced Alzheimer’s rat post-treated with donepezil, a reference control (5mg/Kg b.w. oral) for 10 successive days. Increased AChE activity and decreased Acetylcholine content were recorded in different brain regions in scopolamine-induced Alzheimer’s rats. Post-treatment with W. somnifera extracts caused recovery of the levels of AChE and acetylcholine (ACh) in a dose-dependent manner. These findings suggest that W. somnifera causes perceptible changes in the cholinergic system as one of the facets of its anti-alzheimeric...
