Objective: Recently, natural plants have received much attention as sources of biological active substances including antioxidants. In the present study we investigated In-vitro antioxidant activity of hexane, ethyl acetate and ethanol extracts of Solanum sisymbrifolium aerial parts. Methods: In-vitro antioxidant activity was evaluated for extracts by using free radicals Superoxide (Riboflavin photo reduction method) and DPPH (The scavenging activity for DPPH free radicals was measured according to the procedure described by Bracaand Sanja). Results: The selected plant extracts produced concentration dependent percentage inhibition of different free radicals and produced maximum activity at a concentration of 800µg and there after the percentage inhibition was raised gradually to its maximum level with higher concentrations. Conclusion: In the present study we found that the extracts of Solanum sisymbrifolium showed good antioxidant activity. Among the three extracts, hexane extract showed better activity than the other extracts on the tested super oxide free radical. The order of activity is in the following manner: Ascorbic acid >hexane extract > ethyl acetate extract> ethanol extract. Ethanol...

Anaemia constitutes serious health problem in many countries. It is widespread public health problem, and the fourth leading cause of hospital admissions and the second factor contributing to death. Anaemia is characterized by low count of haemoglobin. The empirical use of herbal preparations in the treatment of anaemia dates from ancient times. Despite the obvious effectiveness and efficacy of iron supplementation, there are certain limitations which include gastrointestinal side effects like nausea, constipation, vomiting, and stained teeth. HgCl2 was administered for induction of anaemia in rats by oral route at 9mg/kg for 30 days simulaneousaly with test & standard drug. After 1 week blood was withdrawn to check all haematological parameters. The animals were treated with standard and test drug. After 2, 3, 4 weeks blood was withdrawn to check haematological & biochaemical parameters. Preliminary phytochemical screening by various tests was done. Acute oral toxicity was also done at 2000mg/kg and 5000mg/kg.HgCl2 induced significant decrease in the blood parameters indicating anaemia which was significantly increase in test and standard...

Tuberculosis is one of the oldest killer diseases of mankind. It is an airborne communicable disease caused by transmission of aerosolized droplets of Mycobacterium tuberculosis. The increasing incidence of MDR- and XDR-TB worldwide highlighted the urgent need to search for newer anti-tuberculosis compounds/drugs.The World Health Organization (WHO) estimated that approximately 80% of world population relies mainly on traditional medicines, mostly plant drugs in their health care. The higher plant extracts are promising sources of novel anti-TB leads. Screening and estimation of lyophilised aqueous, aqueous ethanol and ethanolic extracts of four traditional Indian medicinal plants Acalypha indica, Adhatoda vasica, Allium cepa and Allium sativum for anti-tubercular activity tostandard strain H37Rv, clinical isolate of Isoniazid mono resistant and poly resistant isolates by the sensitive and reliable Broth Microdilution Method (BMM). Inhibition of M. tuberculosis isolates was observed for two of the four medicinal plants. All the three extracts of Allium sativum were found to be active in broth dilution assays with MIC of 500µg/ml and higher against the tested strains. The...

Cymbidium aloifolium is a potent medicinal epiphytic orchid plant in the Indian systems of medicine. Traditionally this plant was used in the treatment of Anti-inflammatory, Paralysis, joining fractured bones, fever, weakness of eyes, chronic illness, burns, sores etc. In the present study three different solvent (Hexane, Chloroform, Methanol) extracts ofCymbidium aloifolium plant was studied for Antibacterial activity by Agar Well Diffusion method against ten clinical pathogenic bacteria. It was observed that Chloroform extract showed significant activity than the Methanol and hexane extracts. Preliminary phytochemical screening of this plant revealed that the presences of Simple sugars, Alkaloids, Tannins, Flavonoids, Anthraquinones, Terpenoids etc. The presence of bioactive constituents is associated with the antimicrobial activity.Antibacterial activity of various solvent extracts of this plant was carried in attempt to support the use by medicinal practitioner for the treatment of various diseases. Medicinal importance of this orchid will target to meet the therapeutic...

An accurate and precise high performance liquid chromatographic method was developed for quantitative estimation of anagrelide in capsule dosage forms. Chromatographic separation of the drug was achieved on a Kromosil C18 column (150 x 4.6 mm; 5µ) by isocratic elution using a mobile phase consisting of phosphate buffer (pH 2.5) and acetonitrile (75:25 v/v) at a flow rate of 1.2 mL/min. The drug in the eluate was monitored by UV detection at 250 nm. Under optimized conditions, the retention time obtained for the drug was 4.818 min. The calibration curve was linear over the range of 50-150 µg/mL of the drug. The recovery of drug by the proposed method was found to be 98.95% to 100.45%. The performance of the method was validated as per ICH guidelines. The method was also found to be applicable for determination of anagrelide in its capsule dosage forms without any interference from the excipients. The proposed method is suitable for routine quality control analysis of...
