This study was carried out during March – April 2013. The fresh leaves collected were extracted with water and used for antioxidant assay. Nitric oxide scavenging activity, Reducing power assay, Metal chelating activity, Phosphomolybdenum activity was assayed and also secondary metabolites such as phenol, flavonoid was estimated. These metabolites play a major role in antioxidant activity. Here, the flavonoid content was found to be more in most of the plants selected thus having significant total antioxidant activity. Likewise, total antioxidant, metal chelating activity was high with Nerium oleander, whereas all the other plant showed moderate amount of antioxidant activity. But the phenol content was low in selected plants....

Recent studies have attempted to identify specific genes that contribute to cardiovascular health and disease. Response to various drugs like statins differs from individual to individual, due to polymorphic variations in drug metabolizing genes related to pharmacogenomics of the diseases. The aim of this study was to find out the association of Cholesteryl ester transfer protein (CETP) gene polymorphism rs708272 (Taq1B) with cardiovascular diseases, since variations in the CETP gene alters the HDL-C levels. The study comprises of 100 samples from individuals visiting the hospital for complaints of CVD. The Taq 1 B polymorphism was analyzed by PCR-RFLP method followed by agarose gel electrophoresis. A Taq 1 B polymorphism of CETP gene at intron 1, resulted in C to T transition. This transition induced the variations in the levels of its expression leading to altered phenotypes in the subjects. We found that CT genotypes of CETP gene were associated with higher expression levels as compared to TT and CC genotype. It is concluded that screening of Taq1B polymorphism may...

Shenmai injection (SMI) is the Traditional Chinese Medicine Injection (TCMI) prepared by Red Ginseng and Radix Ophiopogonis extract. The aim of this study is to reveal the real-word of SMI, to evaluate its use and its adverse reactions associated to patients.A prospective, observational combined nested case-control clinical research carried out in two tertiary care teaching hospitals and two secondary hospitals in China. During the study period, 7632 cases were enrolled and 8 cases of ADR / ADE were reported. It was found that 1.05‰ (95% CI: 0.45-2.06‰) of the patients treated with SMI had some of ADEs classically induced by the use of this drug from the data collected and 6 cases were also in accordance with the instructions, the incidence of ADR to SMI was 1.60‰ (95% CI: 0.58-3.44‰). A total of 121 different diagnoses were stated, most of them were off-label use. 3257 cases (42.68%) in the usage of solvent does not meet the requirements of the specification in accordance with the instructions. 65 cases (0.86%) mixed...

The present research exertion was undertaken to evaluate the antiarthritic effect of methanolic extract of Moringa oleifera Lam stem bark. The extract was subjected to preliminary phytochemical investigation and antiarthritic activity was evaluated with turpentine oil, formaldehyde and CFA induced arthritis. Other parameter like body weight and hematological estimation were carried out.The result indicated that the methanolic extract of Moringa oleifera has excellent antiarthritic activity against turpentine oil, formaldehyde and CFA induced arthritis. The all groups of animals showed increase in the body weight except arthritis control and hematological perturbations indued by CFA were maintained. The complete result indicated that Moringa oleifera methanolic extract possesses a potent protective effect against turpentine oil, formaldehyde and CFA induced arthritis. The consequences of the present investigation proved well thatMoringa oleifera methanolic extract is effective in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis and that it support the common belief prevailing in traditional medicine world...

Research in complementary therapies and alternative medicines is increasing and formulating therapeutic medicines based on these findings has become the need of the hour. The present research aims to formulate and evaluate a polyherbal gel containing Achyranthes aspera and Plectranthus amboenicusextract. The formulation was designed by using alcoholic as well as aqueous extract of Achyranthes aspera and Plectranthus amboenicus leaves in varied concentrations. The extracts were subjected to various physicochemical evaluations. The gel was prepared by using a suitable gelling agent- Carbopol 934. The polyherbal formulation was evaluated for its antifungal activity and it was found that the formulation have elicited promising antifungal activity which was comparable with that of standard drug (fluconazole). However the activity was found to be due to the synergestic blend of herbal drugs. The polyherbal formulation exhibits a promising topical gel for fungal infections of the skin. Thus the present study demonstrates an immense scope for development of such polyherbal formulations and also explores the vast potential to further carry out research by exploiting...
