Free radicals play an effective role in the pathogenesis of different pathological diseases together with cancer. Potential biological targets for free radical attack comprise lipids, proteins and nucleic acids. Free radical induced lipid peroxidation causes a loss of cell homeostasis by modifying the structure and functions of cell membrane. The most important characteristic of lipid peroxidation is to cause a substantial DNA- MDA (Malondialdehyde) adducts by interacting with cellular DNA. Enzymatic antioxidants Superoxide dismutase (SOD), Catalase (CAT), Glutathione peroxidase (GPx) and non-enzymatic antioxidants vitamin E, Reduced glutathione (GSH) proceed synergistically with one another to detoxify the effects of lipid peroxidation. There is occurrence and contribution of oxidative stress in different types of cancer including, Ovarian cancer, Breast cancer, Oral cancer, Lung cancer, Leukemia, Cervical cancer, Prostate cancer, Gastric and Colon cancer which increase the pathogenesis and cause tissue damage in cancer. Lipid peroxidation and levels of enzymatic and non-enzymatic antioxidants can be used as markers of oxidative stress in various...

Cyanobacteria or blue green algae have an extraordinary potential of producing secondary metabolites which can be an ultimate source of newer drugs for future. The purified strain Anabaena showed best photoautotrophic growth at 28oC with specific growth and generation time were 0.098 and 10.0 hr respectively. The better biomass production and antibacterial activity on 30th days of culture. 16 cyanobacterial strains collected from different sites of Delhi and NCR (National Capital Region, INDIA) identified as Microcystis, Anabaena, Oscillatoria, Nostoc, Phormidium sps were examined for antibacterial properties. The crude methanolic intracellular extracts of 8 strains showed activity against non-pathogenic Enterobacter aerogens and all 16 given potential against pathogenic Escherichia coli. In which purified Anabaena sps given maximum antibacterial activity against E. coli while Anabaena (Johad) and Microcystis (water tank) from Manesar (Gurgaon, India) against E. aerogens. The same strain from different origin has different antibacterial activity. This interpretation indicates the biosynthesis of bioactive molecules is niche and species...

Salmonella typhi, causative agent of typhoid fever, a predominantly human communicable disease, is endemic in Africa and Asia. S. typhi is of clinical importance partly due to its mode of infection and partly due to the fact that human activities such as poor hygienic conditions are essential in the transmission and perpetuation of the pathogen. More so antibiotic resistant strains of S. typhi have emerged, increasing cost of treatment, morbidity and mortality. Meanwhile, S. typhi isolation and sensitivity testing to antibiotics are rarely practiced in the hospitals in and around Kumasi. This study sought to determine the extent of antibiotic susceptibility of S. typhi isolated from patients in Kumasi south, North Suntreso and Tafo hospitals in the Ashanti region of Ghana. The isolates were identified using morphological and biochemical means. The isolates were then tested for their sensitivity to some reference antibiotics using the Kirby-Bauer disc diffusion method. One hundred and twenty-eight (128) S. typhi were isolated from 900 clinical samples. A total of 52.3% of the S. typhi...

Microbial fibrinolytic proteases are of considerable interest in view of their specific activity and stability at biological pH. This review describes different isolation methods which enable the screening and selection of promising organisms for industrial production. Further, strain improvement using mutagenesis and/or recombinant DNA technology can be applied to augment the efficiency of the producer strain to a commercial status. The various nutritional and environmental parameters affecting the production of fibrinolytic proteases are delineated. The purification and properties of these fibrinolytic proteases is discussed, and the use of fibrinolytic proteases is...

Natural products have great potential against microbes and can be used to overcome the problem of drug resistant pathogens. They are helpful in reducing the toxicity of existing antifungal compounds. This present in vitro study demonstrated the synergistic effectiveness of Cassia fistula (CF) leaves extracts and fluconazole (Flu) against isolated Flu resistant strains (FRSs) of Candida albicans (CA) as the growth of FRS was found to be sensitive to extracts of CF leaves. In the present study CF leaves’ extracts were prepared in different solvents and their IC50 values were estimated by micro dilution method. It was found a statistical significant decrease in concentration of cellular lipids, phospholipid of FRS when treated against the CF leaves or combination of CF leaves and Flu. Further, H3 uptake analysis revealed that both methods affected the DNA synthesis as well as decrease in DNA contents of FRS. Hence, the results of this study would be significant for the development of new anti candidal drugs from CF leaves’ extracts in combination with known...
