There has been an exponential growth in plant-based products during the last few decades for the treatment of various ailments. According to literature, about 25% of prescribed drugs are of plant origin globally. One such important plant is Asystasia gangetica, also known as ‘Chinese violet’ or ‘Ganges primrose’ is an ornamental, scattering, groundcover herb. The plant is about 0.30 to 0.60 m in height, mainly distributed in sub-Saharan tropical Africa, Arabia, and tropical Asia (including India). Ethnobotanically, the decoction of its leaves is effective in the treatment of rheumatism, stomachache, anthelmintic, heart pains, asthma, astringent, diaphoretic, woman infertility, etc. It is mainly reported to contain chalcone, biflavons, glucoside, amino acid, iridoid glycoside, etc. Pharmacologically plant is reported to possess anti-asthmatic, anti-hypertensive, anti-diabetic, anti-hyperlipidaemic, anti-microbial, anti-oxidant activity, anti-snake venom, etc. The present review is an attempt to describe the important medicinal properties of A. gangeticain the traditional and modern scientific research. It is concluded that the plant has numerous therapeutic potential which need to be...

Now a day’s interest towards natural and has been growing due to the unhealthy consequences of chemicals in the health industry; though, herbal substances possess several quality control and confirm pharmacological action issues. This present study was designed to determine the effects of Salix alba L. methanolic extract (MESAL) for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity in rat models. Further to establish and validate a sensitive, fast and reproducible high performance thin layer chromatographic (HPTLC) method of two biomarker compounds Salicin and Ferulic acid from MESAL. The anti-inflammatory activity was studied by the carrageenan induced rat paw oedema method while DPPH free radical scavenging ability was utilized to determine the antioxidant activity. Additionally, the separation was performed by HPTLC with quantification of markers (Salicin and Ferulic acid). Among the different combinations of mobile phases used, best separation was achieved in Toluene: Ethyl acetate: Methanol: Formic Acid (5:3:1:1v/v/v/v). The MESAL exhibited antioxidant activity with a maximal inhibitory concentration (IC50) value of 400 µg/ml and exerted anti-inflammatory activity, wherein 70% protection was...

A simple UV spectrophotometric method using the first order derivative technique was developed for the simultaneous estimation of tacrolimus and berberine hydrochloride in nanoparticles. The tacrolimus and berberine hydrochloride stock solutions were prepared methanol and scanned in UV- region for first-order derivative spectrum. The zero-crossing point for tacrolimus and berberine hydrochloride was 369 nm and 263 nm, respectively. Linearity was established over the concentration range of 0.5-2.5 μg/ml and 5-25 μg/ml for tacrolimus and berberine hydrochloride with correlation coefficient (r2) value 0.9933 and 0.9796respectively. The method was validated according to ICH guidelines for validation parameters like accuracy, precision, the limit of detection, and the limit of quantification. They found to be within limits. The method was successfully applied for the quantitative estimation of tacrolimus and berberine hydrochloride in...

Background: The entire world is battling the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) that potentially leads to pneumonia, Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS), multi-organ failure, often resulting in death. Therefore, the utmost challenge from a medical perspective is to improve lung function before the patient requires intubation and critical care. In the same light, the use of low dose radiation therapy (LDRT) that has been used to treat various non-malignant inflammatory conditions can be exploited as a promising approach to combat ARDS in COVID-19 patients. LDRT is a century-old popular treatment of viral pneumonia that has been reported to reduce inflammation and prevent the cytokine storm, thus mitigating the severity of pneumonitis. Given the outcomes of pilot clinical studies, the administration of LDRT should be kept as an option in clinical situations where benefits outweigh the risks. Therefore, the present communication highlights the anti-inflammatory role of LDRT so as to revisit its prospective role in COVID-19 pneumonia treatment. Conclusions: In the COVID-19 pandemic, LDRT appears as a cost-efficient, potent, non-invasive, anti-inflammatory treatment...

Colon targeted drug delivery system is a significant part of the pharmaceutical dosage form. Because the colon targeted formulation system only responds to the colon-specific physiological conditions, a triggering mechanism is required. Site of colon provides local and systemic drug delivery. Inflammatory bowel disease can be treated by localized delivery of drugs. The systemic side effect can be decreased by aiming the medications directly to the colonic cycle. Rectal and oral formulations are the major drug targeting strategies that target the colon by pressure, pH, and micro-flora triggered the release of the drug. Formulation of colon targeted system is a complicated process involving substantial efforts. This article discusses the advantages, limitations, primary and advanced approaches, and evaluation of colon-specific systems and provides information regarding some of the formulations available in the market to treat colon-related disorders. This article also focuses on current and future prospects in the area of colon-targeted...
